From Toto to Lassie to Benji and beyond, the dog has thrived in the soil of modern-age media and pop culture. Containing over 200 images, this book serves as a tribute to man's oldest and smelliest friends.
Michael J. Nelson is an actor, writer, director, and musician who served as head writer for ten seasons, and on-air host for five seasons, of the television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. He was also the composer of most of MST3K's original music, and is coauthor of The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide (1996).
This book isn't literature, and its longest section is probably only a paragraph, but I loved it so much I didn't care. The author was a former writer for Mystery Science Theater 3000 (a show that I wasn't a fan of), but the book is chock-full of humor right down my lowbrow alley, and features the kick-ass graphic stylings of Charles S. Anderson. Sweet. If dogs, graphic design and deadpan humor are your thing, this is the book for you.
High literature this isn't, but as a stress-relieving end to an an exhausting week, it is appreciated. Love the subject, love the writer. I must confess, though, my favorite part of the book is the designer's tribute to his boyhood dog, Pignewt, at the end of the book. I am a total sucker for heroic dog stories.
This is the final Popink book with commentary by Mike Nelson. I felt like this was the weakest one. There were a couple funny bits, but dog poop jokes are not my thing. I am not a dog person either, so there's that!
