The Virgin and the Veteran

Rate this book
LucyA prim and proper little princess, they called me. Twenty-eight-years-old, never been kissed, and the closest thing I've ever had to a relationship is running my family vineyard.

But then I met him - a surly, one-eyed war veteran with a will of iron and a heart of gold.

In a single day, he made me feel things I didn't think were possible. In one forbidden afternoon, he made a woman out of me.

And now everything is ruined.

Because how can an ice-queen like me burn for somebody so hotly?

And how can he and I be together, when I'd foolishly promised to get married to his brother?

Harry

An anti-aircraft shell took my eye, my military career, and a whole lot more than that.

Now I live alone, in the big, old house I grew up in, with only racehorses and whiskey for company.

And I like it that way. At least when I'm on my own, I don't have to endure the stares, or the whispers, or the kids pointing in horror at my half-a-face.

But all that was ruined when my brother announced he was getting married, and insisted I 'get to know' his blushing bride-to-be.

My brother, the aspiring politician. He'd never had any interest in women. I knew he'd only get engaged for political convenience; to put on a respectable face for all those picky voters. He didn't even want to hold a girl's hand, so I knew whichever girl he'd pick to marry would have to have a cynical reason of her own.

But why did he have to pick her?

Because the moment I met Lucy Henwood, everything changed.

Her engagement to my brother might be a sham, but my feelings about her aren't.

And after one afternoon of forbidden passion, I know she feels the same way.

I've never burned like this for a woman; and nobody's ever made me feel this complete before.

But how can we be together, when she's stood up and told the world that she's marrying my brother?

The Virgin and the Veteran is an 87,500 word military bad-boy romance with no cheating (seriously) and scenes so steamy, you might need to apply ice afterward. HEA guaranteed.

I was really excited to read this story. And I was pretty happy with it in the beginning. Unfortunately, overall it was just bleh for me. I didn't connect with any of the characters and that was too bad because I really wanted to. Also the author pretty much lost me with the "steamy" scenes. They were just a little all over the place for me.

The racehorse was probably my favorite character in the story. I would have loved Harrys character but it seemed he was pretty clueless when it came to his brother which I didn't understand because the story stated several times that they had been inseparable up to the accident. If that was true, I just don't see how he wouldn't have known all those things.

I just didn't feel there was enough information on Lucy. It is hard to connect with someone when it seems everything is a bit superficial.

ARC errors aside, and there were many, My rating is strictly based on the story and its one dimensional characters.

I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.

Champagne & Spurs is a battle of the broken. Scars run deep. Harry has external marks, Lucy has internal ones. Neither are comfortable with facing the demons that dog them from every angle. instead each prefers to numb themselves to the pain. By any means necessary. The problem with doing so is that in their self-destruction others are collateral damage. Scarlet takes life at it's most painful and finds beauty in the pain and redemption in the healing.

i have loved all of SS knucklehead books but this seems like it was written by a different writer. it was meh to say the least. the story was boring, the behaviour of the H was weird, how he spoke about not having had sex for 9 years was frankly ridiculous. i was cringing it was so lame. and the whole silly plot around her fiance being gay but no one knew? so stupid.

oh and yet again the English language used, i know the author is English but come on no one speaks like this anymore even upper middle class people!! i found the language archaic and frankly embarrasing to read. just bad, old fashioned and so stereotypical.

nope not one of her best works and best left unread incase it puts you off her other works which are 5 star reads.

i almost dnf this so many times and only forced myself to skim read the last few chapters because of my loyalty to the knuckleheads.

does not do the author justice at all!

Harry Holybourne is the man!

I loved this character to death. Flawed but still strong. Lonely and gruff but still lovable. Lucy was the perfect complement to Harry. After agreeing to marry his brother Charlie, Lucy is sent to go and meet his only family. Whoooooweee, lets just say that sparks were bound to fly when these two unique people meet. Great story!

Ice or Fire 🔥

Talk about a delightful switcheroo! Which brother will get the girl? Happily, the one with the matches. Lucy was once described as ice, but Harry lit the pilot light. This is a delightful love story from start to finish. Of course, it is for adults only, but everybody loves a touching story.

A gay brother, a scared brother & a pretty woman

Set in British some of the words I didn’t know. Harry was the brother of Charlie who is set to marry a 28 year old virgin named Lucy. Who Charlie has not consummated his relationship with and give Lucy’s kisses on the check. Harry is a one eyed horse rancher who lives like a hermit until he meets Lucy.

A proposed marriage of convenience is accepted and everyone is happy, until Lucy meets Charlie’s younger brother.

Charlie Holybourne is a man who is interested in politics and needs to get married to represent the Family Values platform that he is running on. The only problem is that he really isn’t ready to get married and has no interest in any woman enough to get married. His working relationship with Lucy Henwood presents a perfect scenario for both of them. Lucy needs to be married for her family business and she has no prospects in mind. This could be the perfect solution for both of them.

Charlie’s younger brother Harry is a reclusive man who runs a ranch outside of town. Charlie calls to tell Harry he’s getting married and asks Harry to welcome Lucy to the family. Harry reluctantly agrees to meet Lucy and welcome her. Harry was injured in the war and is not a man who wants to be seen by anyone thats why he keeps to himself and stays on his ranch. When he meets Lucy he finds that he wants things he hasn’t wanted in years.

Lucy and Harry have somethings in common and these commonalities will lead to a relationship that neither one expected.

I really enjoyed this book and found the story line to be very deep and sad. I loved how these two found each other and everyone found their true path in their futures. This story was a love story, but it was a bit more to me. It showed how so often people will judge a person based on their appearance or demeanor. Just because someone is reclusive or keeps to themselves, doesn’t always mean that they are a bad person or a grouch. I liked how Simone showed how perception is not always true and that we really shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. The characters in this book were well written and well developed. They all seemed to find their true path and found happiness. I give this story a 4 star review and would like to find more of Simone Scarlet’s books to read in the future.

Interesting story. She's a 28 year old virgin who agrees to marry a man (whom she doesn't love) in order to save her families vineyard. (It's a marriage of convenience for both of them.) He's the brother to her fiance'. Within hours of meeting the soon to be brother-in-law, she is losing all self control. Both had physical ailments that left them self-conscious and hiding their true selves from the rest of the world. That added to their attraction to one another other. The book is filled with sexual content and all the dirty talk. That doesn't bother me none, except for some reason, it felt like the author was trying too hard. I would have liked to see more interactions with the characters outside the bedroom. One other negative I have, is some of the dialect. It was based in modern day England, but some of the wording or phrases the characters used, made it feel like it set in the Victorian Age. I'm a bit of a Anglophile and an familiar with the British lingo, and most of what is said in this book, is new to me. Also, there was a lot of redundancy with the thoughts the characters had. While there wasn't a twist per se, there was a 'bad guy' who threatened everyone's livelihood. There are a few secrets revealed. The sex scenes are pretty hot... and dirty. The characters aren't too complex or complicated. The story itself moves quickly. There is kinda sorta cheating involved, so if that's a turn off for you in books, you may not enjoy this book as much.

💕With a kilted pirate to heat things up, this one is a🔥 smoldering winner!😋😍
July 29, 2018
👍👍Loved it!🔥🔥🔥🔥😜
Very $exy tale of two lonely people just going through the motions of life until the perfect someone gets them to truly start living. It's well-written and the steamy scenes are totally sublime, including some hot and heavy action by a kilted pirate!! Lucy, the heroine, has a secret condition that she believes marks her as too damaged for any man to accept and love her true self. Circumstances lead her to settle for a lackluster future until fate sends her to hero Harry's door and totally upsets her plans (in a marvelously thrilling way)!

The basic plot is not totally original, as the author herself would concede, but she does an awesome job making it her own by tweaking the details and setting the action in England, near Winchester. I adored the main characters and felt they were given depth and heart. The villain was so slovenly, selfish and conniving that he was a bit over the top, but the other characters, even politically ambitious Charlie, made up for him. I enjoyed every chapter, right through to the perfect ending.:-)

If you prefer your heated scenes without kink, this may not be your perfect fit. If adventurous passion is something you like, then I recommend it highly.🌟

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Lucy believes that her unusual appearance prevents any chance of finding true love, while Harry’s disfiguring scars have kept the women away for nearly a decade. Neither is prepared for the incendiary attraction they feel for each other from the moment they meet. Theirs is an intense insta-love that explores a physical attraction that isn’t based entirely on their outward appearances. The sense of unity, of fate, that they feel right from the start was breathtaking and heartwarming all at once.

These two have quite the circumstances to wade through – they meet because she’s agreed to marry his brother. But secrets abound, nothing is as it seems, and the only thing anyone can count on is that Lucy and Harry are absolutely inseparable and together they’ll wade through all the family drama – hers and his – with plenty of snarky humor and a whole lot of steam.

This book was a joy to read, rollicking good fun layered over a deeply emotional foundation. I loved Harry’s take-no-prisoners approach to life, and while Lucy was adorable in her inexperience, she also had a strong sense of herself and had no problems keeping up with every facet of Harry’s larger-than-life persona. These two were so perfect together, so much fun to watch fall in love. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I volunteered to read an advanced copy of Champagne & Spurs by Simone Scarlet. It tells the story of a nearly 30 year old woman that accepts a pretty random proposal from an ‘eligible bachelor’ if you will after a lifetime of shutting people out due to her own insecurities. She has become so skilled in maintaining distance, that she has never really dated & sadly, almost feels like she needs to jump on what she believes may be her only shot at the 2.5 kids, picket fence life despite barely knowing her now fiancé. There are some unspoken PR/business benefits in it for both of them as well that are the icing on the cake. Except, who could know that she’d find a her first true, intimate connection with a man just days after her engagement.... or that the man would be his brother? As you can see, the story line is pretty intriguing so I was excited to read this one but, unfortunately, it wasn’t really my cup of tea. It could just be personal though. To be honest, I’m not the ‘woe is me’, ‘no one will ever love me’ type so not only did I have a hard time connecting with the characters but, it’s possible I was turned off by that narrative in the first chapters so didn’t give the rest a fair shot. A more compassionate person might adore it.

I absolutely love this well balanced story of love and seduction. It was woven together with such lively characters to make a sparkling read. Champagne & Spurs is the story about people who when the right person comes along learns to love themselves despite their flaws or rather learn to live by embracing them. When Lucy who is engaged to Charlie meets her fiance's brother Harry her world is turned upside down. He turns her into a new person. And Lucy is the only woman who not only dared to come close but break down all the walls Harry has built after a major incident in his life. Both can't resist the other and have developed stronger feelings but they also can't break Charlie's trust. One scandal, one drunk man and a hungry reporter all threatening to implode their world. How they all manage to come out of this chaos ensuing their happy endings? Read on to find out.
P.S. The story has a very sexy man in kilt and if not for the above just try it to find out if he has anything underneath it ha ha.

Lucy Henwood accepts a marriage proposal from Charles Hollybourne. He insists that she meet his brother Harry so they can begin to establish family ties. This meeting sets the stage for all the things that happen next- the rumors, rogue reporters, slimy family members and the creation of a new cocktail!

If this sounds like a lot of wacky stuff happens, it does. Some of it is quite funny! But what stands out most is the concept of people learning who they are and accepting themselves.

I gave the book 3 stars because it contained too much gratuitous sex. I like a hot story, this one was really hot, but I felt it wasn’t always used to further the story, but it was just there to fill n space where more dialogue/plot could have been used. This is just my opinion.🙃

Overall a good story, that contains very likable characters that you can easily engage with. This is my first book by this author, But I look forward to reading some of her other work.

I have a confession... When I started this book, I was not a fan... I closed the book after 4 chapters, with thought it was just not for me.
Then I started having these strange flashback moments of the characters I had been introduced too, throughout my day(s) wether I was reading something else or driving past a horse stable- taking this a sign I needed to go back and give this book another try.
I. AM.SO.GLAD.I.DID!
Snarky, full of feels, heat ( and I do mean HEAT WOO!), and humor- this not so typical romance was a breath of fresh air amongst the masses!
The Champagne and whiskey flow freely just as sexuality does it's a perfect mix of reality and fiction making me wonder why I ever put this book down in the first place!
I highly suggest checking this one out for yourself!

P.S That whole Ginger Root scene... I am all for... nope... Just. Well, that's not nice!

This was a good story about three people hiding for various reasons. Harry and Lucy are the main characters and it is their story, but Charlie is the one engaged to Lucy. When Lucy and Harry meet for the first time, they are struck by how much they want each other. This book shows you that it is more on who a person is inside than the outside. I loved how Harry made Lucy feel like she is beautiful and mean it. He's not just saying it because. Harry has finally found someone who looks more at who is in then how he looks. The chemistry and attraction between them is undeniable. The banter between Harry and Lucy, and Lucy and Graham had me laughing. Simone did a great job with all the characters and the storyline. It was great when they stopped hiding who they were.

Champagne and Spurs by Simone Scarlet is a gripping read full of steam, drama, emotions, confusion and conflicts.
Harry and Lucy are so made for one another! I loved their flirting and banter. It was great fun how their initial meeting
went and it was all drama-filled down hill from there.
As this is the first book by this author that I have read it was refreshing and exciting. Her characters are interesting and engaging as well. I appreciated Lucy and Harry’s personal struggles and found them to be strengths as well as a bond.
Overall a well written book I enjoyed a great deal.

I loved this "beauty" and the "beast" type story and quickly fell in love with both Lucy and Harry. Each of them hid their "ugliness" from the world in their own way but when fate throws them together, they both realized how free they could be if they could just find a way to be together. Alas, the fate that brought them together may also be the fate that keeps them from their HEA. Again, I LOVED this story and encourage those of you that have never read this author before to go ahead and take a chance as you might just find a new favorite author.

Lucy works for her family's vineyard but hides a secret from the world...she's a monster under the makeup and wig.
Harry owns Moon Eye Livery Stable, named after his scarred eye, and stays out of the public eye to hide his monstrous face that makes babies cry.
Can these two monsters show each other their beauty?
Loved it!!! Wonderful, heartwarming story with just enough drama to keep you hanging on with baited breath!

I received this as an advanced reading copy.

This book has a terrible start. It is so unbelievable that I can't get past it. No woman is going to accept a proposal, on a first date with a man she isn't even into, just because she is 28 years old. And then invite the guy up for sex because they got engages so they might as well? Not really. And no guy is going to turn it down unless he also is really not into her. The start turned me off the book. It is supposed to hook you and reel you in. Not this one.

This is my first read by Simone Scarlett and I liked it. Harry is basically a hermit because of his scarred face and Lucy has insecurities of her own that make her a little standoffish. She's his brother's fiance in a marriage of convenience but when Lucy and Harry meet all their inhibitions are ripped away and they are completely taken with each other. The chemistry and scorching sex between Harry and Lucy is totally hot! Champagne and Spurs is a bit of a wacky romance but entertaining It's a kind of sweet, somewhat amusing, and definitely steamy good read. I enjoyed it.

When Harry meet Lucy

This book was definitely deserved it's 5 stars! In the beginning it made sense why Lucy agreed to marry Charlie. He needed the marriage for his political career and other reasons. She was a 28 year old spinster that herself from the world.
Then she meet Harry. Hot damn! The gorgeous hermit who had his own insecurities. After a disfiguring injury he hid himself from society and from himself. Their chemistry were off the charts! Blazing hot! Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Scars...

This is the first book by this author I have read and I'm glad I did. I truly enjoyed the story-line and the characters. Both Harry and Lucy had their scars that had shaped them into who they were. Maybe those scars are what help them see the "true person" the other was. Of course their HEA was paved with an easy road...that would make a boring read and this was anything but boring.

Harry lost his eye and military career and now lives alone because of the stares he receives. His brother is an aspiring politician and is marrying Lucy for his image. Now Charles is throwing Lucy and Harry together to get to know each other. What will happen when sparks fly between these two, can Lucy go through with the wedding? I loved the characters and the story is fun, entertaining and steamy. An entertaining read.
