I have taken the Keys training twice (once with this older version of the book and again with the newer version dated 2010), and I have also taken the coaches training.
By the end of the school year, all teachers at my school will be trained in Keys.
Joan's ideas really are not new - use graphic organizers, take notes with a 2 column format, make sure students know how to find the main idea of a text, etc. In fact, I took a workshop at Landmark college my second year teaching (25 years ago), and learned much of this at that workshop. This makes sense given Joan worked for Landmark.
This routine is helpful because it explains in concrete terms how to help students succeed in all classes, not just English, when it comes to reading and note taking and finding the main idea of a text. Common Core State Standards mandate that all teachers must be literacy teachers, and many non-English/ELA teachers find this intimidating, overwhelming, and even frightening. This book helps all teachers to meet the goal to be a literacy teacher. Full of examples, this book is easy to follow, but I recommend people receive the actual training from Keys staff as well.
