Darknet vultures are preying on governments with digital currency promises.

The world is almost ready for fiat currency to be replaced by a superior digital currency. The trouble is, which one and who owns it?

The R-Group is back and guiding players to a safe landing pad in the complex world of cryptocurrency. Global Bank wants to lead the race to blockchain adoption, but inhouse resources lack the expertise. Tonya is assigned by Global Bank leaders to hire a cryptologist to design the new global replacement for fiat currency.

The cynical hack-and-slash digital currency swindlers, Matthias and Dutch, are jumping from country to country, peddling their new cryptocurrency as a savior for economically failing countries. Next on their shopping list is Venezuela, where the failing economy is desperate for a solution.

Watch these new pirates do their coupon-clipping straight out of your digital wallet.

Early cryptocurrency pioneer, Su Lin, is threatened by a dark figure from her past at her home. The evil henchman has his orders to bring her and her early prototype of digital currency back to China. Formerly Master Po, the Chinese Cyber Warfare College founder, Su Lin is forced to help those in power to jumpstart their race to the top of the cryptocurrency market. You will wonder which side she is on.

Jacob, Petra, and Quip, R-Group experts, keep tabs on the opportunistic cryptocurrency swindlers as well as other digital currency players.

Digital currency battles have the cyber good guys engaged in cyber combat with bad actors from the Darknet traveling from Atlanta, Paris, Venezuela, and finally to China. Can they maintain economic balance across the world in lock step with the cryptocurrency wars of the 21st century?

Award-winning authors Breakfield and Burkey explore the future of world commerce, cryptocurrency, and the complications that arise from creating an all-digital monetary system.

In the digital currency gold rush of the 21st century, is there anyone looking out for the average citizen?

There is many different types of science-fiction read, this one is not one of alien monster and big giant spaceship so if you’re looking for that, you might pass. In fact, I hardly even consider it a science-fiction book, being so close to reality and having very few elements of what, for me, makes science-fiction what it is. That being said, this is a well build book!
First of all, this is tenth book of the Enigma Series, which I never read any before, I don’t know how much link there’re between each of them, but for the storyline, I wasn’t out of place and could easily follow it, but I find that the characters were a bit generic, not unique and mostly interchangeable, maybe that’s a point I would reconsider reading the previous one, but for this particularly book, I think that the development of characters is probably the lowest element of all. That being said, this book bring you in a very political-economical complex intrigue, with some technological elements (that’s is why I wasn’t sure it really belong in science-fiction…), but the story is very well put into place, like I said, complex, lot of characters, many different settings and time, an intrigue that play on an international level, etc. but the authors find a way to keep it going on track for the entire book and that’s good work. The writing was good but I would say a bit dry (in French we call it «une écriture sèche») not sure is dry is appropriate in English, but I mean a writing that is more factual then poetic, not a bad or a good point, can be both, it depends on your personal preferences! So, not a big win for me (personal taste) because of all this economical part of it, but if you love complex intrigue, have an interest in economy and crypto-currency (which by the way is very original, we don’t see much book on that subject), this might be a good pick!

4.5/5.0

Highly complex, this fast-paced story provides not only a thrill ride but also an education in crypto-currency, artificial intelligence, and the dark net.

This novel appears to begin simply enough by painting an idealistic picture of a happy and peaceful couple enjoying the life down on their Georgia farm. Su Lin is half a world away from her birthplace and old life. She had created an unbreakable code that, cashed in on a new world of "bitcoin" technology or crypto-currency, could have global repercussions. Her old world now wants that code. All of it. And they crash the sanctity of the farm looking to kidnap and take her back.

This is the first of the series I've read, but this multi-layered, intelligently plotted narrative stays solidly on focus and can function as a standalone. There is a co-protagonist group comprising a crack computer team, heavily backed by ICABOD, their AI (artificial intelligence) supercomputer. ICABOD has a vast store of detailed information and technology. He's also stretching his personality into occasional humorous asides that both amuse and disarm his originating designers. The team experts include Jacob, whose betrothed is Petra. Among other characters involved are Quip and EZ, Andy's daughter, Julie and Juan, and Otto and Haddy. There are several antagonists as well, including Guano (aptly named), and Mathias and Dutch.

Wolfgang, Jacob's grandfather, suffers both a heart attack and stroke and slammed into the hospital in a coma becomes Jacob's major focus. He finds what appears to be journals or books by Wolfgang and begins to read to Wolfgang the story of he and his two buddies as they relate the discovery of the Enigma code. As he monitors the old boy and between reading from the book, he creates a genius code of his own to employ in gaining the freedom of Su Lin.

The plan for the safe return of Su Lin was brilliant as was making sure Guano was never going to be a problem again in the future. The scenarios of all that a global crypto-currency would entail in the darknet had my head spinning. The obvious knowledge of the digital technology was staggering and if you are looking for a little education, this is where it's at, along with a fascinating tale of intrigue and rescue that'll leave you scratching your head in disbelief. I was given this ebook download by the publisher and NetGalley and thoroughly enjoyed the read. Recommended to all readers who enjoy technology with their thrillers.

Really enjoyed this book. It is one of a series apparently that I hadn’t heard of but even though there were many that came before it, it’s fine as a stand alone book as well. I look forward to reading the other books.
The book kept me wanting to read more to find out what was going to happen next.
Full Disclosure- I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I received a free audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In a world of the future yet so very close to present, countries are in digital warfare over the ever-growing popularity in cryptocurrency. Some are creators, some are swindlers, and others are power-starved and ready to take any action necessary. With a story going in so many different directions and so many different intents from a vast array of characters, you begin to wonder who’s side some of these individuals are truly on.

Going in to this story I truly had no idea what to expect. Upon introduction I thought it was just going to be another one of those boring, overcomplicated stories that get too involved with a bunch of conspiracy theories, but I’m happy to say that this wasn’t the case.

The Enigma Source takes a look at a developing digital currency and the determination to control the industry from different agencies and countries alike. Some of these leaders are willing to go to great lengths to be at the top of the cryptocurrency food chain, while others simply try to defend those in danger.

At first, I thought I was going to be overwhelmed with all the different subplots going on, but they wound up being great and added a lot to the overall story. All the characters were vastly different in their own ways, and all of them served an important role in some way, shape, or form. Everything in this book served a purpose, and made it all the more interesting. It was most definitely a sci-fi, but it all certainly felt like something that could truly happen in our own world. It’s something I would honestly call a realistic sci-fi, myself.

In terms of readability, I can’t comment on. As I said earlier in the review, the copy I received was an audio book. But I CAN say that the voice actor does a phenomenal job giving each and every character their own unique voice, making each speaker immediately identifiable.

Overall, it was a decent audio book. I would certainly be willing to hear, or perhaps read more from Breakfield and Burkey.
