String patterns are a unique and simple learning system to master the major scale and being able to utilize the major scale during playing. Traditional methods to learn a scale are based on patterns only, which usually leads to being "boxes in" and very little practical value. A pattern-only system lacks to teach fundamental music knowledge such as root note location across the fretboard. On the other hand, instructional YouTube video can provide partial information but lack of the complete overview that is needed to understand and use the major scale. The String pattern learning system makes you utilize the entire fretboard. They are designed to be efficient and effective while maintaining a practical approach, and do not lead to the feeling of being "boxed in." Instead of boxes, locations are created on the fretboard that in combination with complete fretboard knowledge such as note locations and even scale degrees connect to one overall pattern--the major scale. String patterns combined with essential core music theory will set the stage that you reach the next level of your guitar playing. This learning system will take you beyond learning patterns or shapes and gives you a deeper understanding of the major scale. Further, the fundamental knowledge of music theory provided in this book will help you to go beyond the major scale into modes, and even beyond that. Notes, scale degrees, triads, chords, modes, modal chords will be covered; even the pentatonic scale, soloing based on chord progressions, derive the CAGED system, and much more.
This is a poorly written and designed book. Despite it’s claims there are ZERO exercises in this book. Scale patterns are simply reshown multiple times and you’re told to practice them, without a backing track for 5 minutes, and with a backing track for 10 minutes. Of course, just like the exercises, backing tracks are nowhere to be found. I cannot recommend.
