When Esme's parents forsake the safety of the domed city of Legerdemain and vanish into the Desertlands of the Beyond, she vows she will never become like them: a Leaver.
But years later, when Esme's friend Theia also chooses exile in the Beyond rather than submit to the Council's cruel whims, Esme makes an irrevocable decision -- one that will forever alter the deep, complex bond she shares with Theia.
Exploring the Beyond is more dangerous than Esme could have imagined -- and that includes her intensifying attraction for someone who could cost her everything: her friends, her newfound freedom, and perhaps even her life...
The dome of Legerdemain keeps its people safe. In return, the council matches its citizens for the best genetic matches and determines the number of children they can have. In Legerdemain, people fear being marked as a Singleton. Esme has always vowed to never become like her parents: Leavers. But when her best friend Theia is determined to leave Legerdemain so she can be with her boyfriend, Massimo, Esme must bring her back.
This was a very fascinating story. I really enjoyed the Worldbuilding and watching Esme's perception of Legerdemain change as she explored the Beyond. Parts of this were a bit cliche, but it didn't kill my overall enjoyment. I really loved the myths of the Green Place and the visions Esme experienced from the Buteo leaf.
Akuna was probably my favorite character. She was fierce, loyal and determined to do what she believed was right. She really brought out the audacity in Esme with their craziness. Silas was a very interesting character and I was highly confused with how his and Esme's relationship developed. It seemed like it was going one way and then it randomly did a 180. So I am highly confused.
I'm curious to see what will happen next with Esme and her friends. I hope to pick up the second book at some point and find out what other secrets Legerdemain is hiding.
This is a solid 4.5 star rating for me. I really liked the author's writing style and enjoyed traveling the beyond with the group. Also I really loved the chemistry between the different characters. I can't wait for the next book.
There is so many books out there it’s hard to find something different but this story is uniquely different. It is well written and she brings the characters alive before my very eyes
