Once upon a time, there were two hamsters, Waffles and Pancakes who were best friends for many years. Their owners Danny and Griffin were also best friends who live next door to each other.
Danny got a cat for Christmas. He decided to name him Matz. Waffles and Pancakes think that Matz will hurt them. Cats usually are not friends with hamsters.
They were tired of finding places inside to hide from him. It seemed like Matz was following them everywhere they went.
Matz was so sad that the hamsters didn’t like him because he was different.
Come see what happens when Waffle & Pancakes learn a Lesson in Being Different.
Cindy Springsteen lives on Long Island with her husband and two kids. Since her teens she has been writing. She started writing poetry and has published, and won awards for her work. "Waffles and Pancakes" is her first published children's book.
Waffles and Pancakes are two tiny hamsters which are enjoying family visitors at Christmas time. When gifts are distributed amongst the family, Waffles and Pancakes are horrified to see one Christmas gift in particular – a cat named Matz, which is a new pet for the family’s son, Danny. Waffles and Pancakes hide from Matz, as does the family dog, Lexi. Matz feels sad and very alone. He does not understand why the other pets do not want to be friends and play with him. When it rains outside, Waffles and Pancakes are forced to face their fears, with surprising results.
This is one of the more positive and interesting books I have read in recent weeks as it deals with a highly sensitive issue which is faced in all countries around the globe right now: DIVERSITY. Cindy and Daniel Springsteen’s tale of three pets, all of which are absolutely terrified of the newest family member for no other reason than that it looks different delivers a very important message about fear being a learned thing. Too many people assume that just because somebody or something looks different, that it cannot be tolerated. The new cat, Matz, faced long and lonely days without any friends in his new home simply because he was not a hamster and was not a dog. When people assume that someone or something is dangerous simply because that person or thing is not like them, it sends a tragic message of intolerance. As a Deaf person living in an audist and surdophobic country, I am all-too-aware of being judged for being different to how the government sees an “ideal person,” so am quite familiar with automatic exclusion based on something that is out of my control. I very much like the message which Waffles and Pancakes: A Lesson in Being Different shines on the world, and recommend it to readers aged 5-12 years of age, so that they can actively help make the world a more accepting, tolerable and inclusive place in years to come.
Waffles and Pancakes ate scared of the new cat. They tried hiding but that didn't work. Their owners finally came up with a plan. This delightful book shows that being different is o.k. with its colorful illustrations the book is appealing to children and teaches an important lesson.
Waffles And Pancakes (series) by Cindy Springsteen A lesson in friendship (Friendship matters more than material things) A lesson in bullying (The cause and effect of bullying) A lesson in the true meaning of Christmas (A heart-warming story about love and friendship) A lesson in being different (Don't judge a book by its cover)
The Waffles And Pancakes series are well written stories that teach valuable lessons on friendship, bullying, the true meaning of Christmas and on being different with each one helping the reader dig deeper into the true meaning of character, courage and consciousness. The stories pay careful attention to explaining the lesson with clear examples and descriptive passages that empower the reader to be kind, compassionate and respectful.
These books are great to read aloud to younger children, but I feel their real magic lies in older children who can read on their own; this is an important niche. These heartfelt lessons are respectful to the intelligence of the reader and should be available in libraries, schools and therapists offices. These books are great tools for social emotional learning!
