The book is not bad, But also not very good, you need first to have a background of how magneto work as a system.
One of the best chapters in this book is "Database Design" also the "How Modules Work - and your first step to make your own module" chapter.

The book shouldn't be your first on Magento as an environment, if you feel ready for development , and the whole structure of the system is something not new to you , then this book will be a very handy one , specially as it is run by example.

I can't deny that i got lost more than once in it, as there is some points not clear enough. so what you need is :
- good background about Magento as a system.
- The book.
- Google
