This volume takes on an interesting task—to outline the correlates between many dimensions of human life and socioeconomic status. This covers many aspects of human life, from demography to family matters to attitudes and beliefs to physical and mental health to even biological factors.

This work does a good job in taking on this difficult task, given the wide-ranging issues tackled. The work begins, as seems sensible, with conceptualizing what we mean by socioeconomic status (hereafter, SES). We know many metrics, from education level, occupation, to income/wealth, inter alia. This chapter helps to provide scaffolding for the remainder of the book.

Thereafter, the authors explore the correlates of SES issue after issue. Some examples. Chapter 2 examines sociodemographic correlates of SES, with consideration of such characteristics as sex, sex ratios, age, race/ethnicity, religion, and the like. Chapter 3 considers how family features are associated with SES. Much research in the social sciences has examined what variables affect important attitudes and beliefs. Chapter 5 look at how SES affects such items as optimism, life satisfaction, educational aspirations, political attitudes/behavior, religious values and beliefs, and so on. Chapters 7 and 8 consider correlations between SES and physical and mental health.

In the end, this is a pretty imposing creation, pulling together research and knowledge in many and varied aspects of human life. Each area itself has had many researchers examine relationships between SES and specific areas. Much literature for the authors to peruse “out there”! For those interested in the relationships between SES and key parts of human life, then this book would be a fine resource for you.
