Is there a 100-pound semi-aquatic South American rodent in your kitchen?
I am Dobby the Capybara, I live in the suburbs, and this is my story. Royalty is automatic among the world's largest rodents, but I am The Prince. Read the highly opinionated record of my downfall from pampered pet to grubby, corn-obsessed middle age.
This isn't "How to Capybara" anything, and the facts are a little bit mixed up. If you are interested in wild capybaras, don't look here! I can tell you what's in my refrigerator, though, and where the off-limits birdseed is. I also discuss visitor expectations, explain discreet coprophagy techniques, and offer advice on forays into forbidden parts of the house. Grab a highlighter and take notes in case there is a poop quiz!
Who would have thought that the life of a pet capybara (the world's largest rodent) could be so interesting! Dobby Winnick, aka Prince Dobalob, considers himself to be royalty and his caretaker, the "Farm Manager" to be his servant. Talk about an animal that feels entitled!
The book is written as an autobiography but I think, as with so many celebrities, that he used a ghost writer. Nevertheless, his voice is captured in a very entertaining and believable manner. He goes into great detail about his daily routine and the various things that disrupt it, such as trips to the vet, visitors, and malfunctioning swimming pools. Life is both very cush and very trying for this prince among swine, or actually geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, doves, and so many more that your help will spin. Even with all of these co-pets, Dobby runs the whole place, which is a big responsibility.
If you have any interest in capybaras or rodents in general or pets or animal autobiographies, this is THE BOOK for you! Even if you don't, you'll find it entertaining and amusing. Although written by an animal, it is not really a children's book, although middle school children would probably enjoy it. I am an adult and I feel the book's audience is meant to be adult.
Oh, and the illustrations are super cute! They were clearly done by someone who really knows capybaras.
