The Sorting Tree

They raced through childhood on the bare backs of horses as though Life was leaving them and they must rush.

Paul, Ben, Eve: children of the 1960s in Virginia’s grand estate country. Loyalty, love and a reckless heart collide with times of change and trouble.

Paul’s wealth... Ben’s sacrifice... Eve’s insurgent nature.... Not these nor anything could break the springtide bonds of these children of summer; not the clash of hard convictions, nor atrocity of war, nor rage of revolution.

It’s only love that can divide where love burns bright, the master of itself. Even death must bow to it: For in our truest moments we love most. And in our truest moments, we live on.

The Sorting Tree” is the story of three friends who were born into very different lives in the 1960s in Virginia. As readers, we get to see each of them as they grow and their lives change. Paul is the one with the money, the son of a billionaire. Unfortunately for Paul, growing up in such a way is not always worth it as the path of his life seems to have been chosen for him before he was even born. Ben is the one who sees the good in everyone and everything and is willing to sacrifice all to make the world better. He is definitely a young man who is too good for the world he lives in. And finally, there is Eve, a young woman whose life is filled with anger at the whole world because of the loss of her mother.

This is a story of friendship, of love, of passion for what people believe in, and of growth and change in a troubled time. As these characters get older, we see love blossom between Ben and Eve even as he heads to Vietnam. We see Paul head off to Yale rather than off to war. Can their friendship survive through such horrible times and such huge social differences? Can Eve and Ben’s love hold together when they are so far apart and then, even when they are back in the same place, with their lives so far apart? So many questions and the only way to learn the answers is to read the book.

“The Sorting Tree” is very well-written and one that will keep the reader engrossed from the first to the last page. At times you will laugh and at other times you will just feel that your heart is breaking. T.A. Barnes has created a world that will seem so real you will feel as if you are there in Virginia, sitting under this beautiful tree discussing what comes next. Each of the characters is very well-developed. Even though each of these three friends is completely different in terms of beliefs, social status, and personalities it is easy, as the reader, to understand how they came together and ended up so very close. Everything about it from the storyline to the settings to the characters is just perfect.

I recommend “The Sorting Tree” to everyone out there who would like to simply be taken away to another time and place for a while to see what life was like. Through the good and the bad, this is a story of the bonds of friendship and how deeply they are felt. I do not believe anyone will finish the story and not feel something for these characters. I thought it was just wonderful and I have no doubt that many others will feel the same way.

Beautifully written. This book made me wish I was with Ben, Eve and Paul riding past the Sorting Tree. It is a well told coming of age story that I couldn't put down, and that I was sorry to see end.
