It used to be so simple. You made a website or application to work on a 15" monitor and, incompatibilities between browsers aside, you were done. Then along came mobile phones with web browsers and they ruined all our easy lives. Worse than that, people loved browsing the web on them! Fortunately, by using responsive web design techniques, you can use one set of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and display appropriate elements in an appropriate way to suit each platform. In Jump Start Responsive Web Design , you'l learn responsive techniques to make your designs look magnificent on any device, future-proof them, and reduce development time and budget. RWD helps you deal with the very real problem of not knowing where and how your application will be used. Completely overhauled for its second edition, this book covers:
It is always proper to make a good first impression. Whether it is for relationship building or reading a book, that first impression sets the table well for positive momentum to snowball. A book title, like a warm, personal introduction, is the first impression.
Jump Start stays true to its meaning. It is not supposed to be an all-encompassing tome of every fact possible. It is also not supposed to be about the author flaunting just how smart they are like I've read in other books. It is about giving the reader just enough information to understand the subject matter and encouraging the reader to want to know more. This book does just that.
The author was able to showcase his wealth of experience on Responsive Web Design through clear and concise examples. As you progress through the book, these examples build on top of each other in a very logical way. You know that the author has put a lot of thought in structuring the book because everything just flows well.
Responsive Web Design is a pretty simplistic topic when you compare it to others in IT such as web development, cloud computing, data analytics, etc. Therefore, a book of this size is perfect quick read for this topic.
If you are a web developer, I highly recommend this book so that you will know how to quickly explain to non-technicals how Responsive Web Design works. If you are non-technical, I highly recommend this book just so that you'll have a feel as to how tedious Responsive Web Design can be. Overall, I highly recommend this book.
Review of print book Jump Start Responsive Web Design 2nd Ed. by Chris Ward 2017 ISBN 978-0-9943470-9-1
- No index. - Publisher, sitepoint.com, does not maintain errata on their website. - Acronym SEO used, but not introduced.
Fluff writing style throughout. e.g. p.91, "The first important fact to know when using relative sizes is what these sizes are relative to." Just *write* what is important -- no introduction needed. Make an important fact or point the topic sentence of a paragraph.
Multiple little editing failures. e.g. p. 107, "break point." Yet the logical definition on p. 33 has, "The specific widths at which we want our design to reflow are known as breakpoints."
