I was not raised in a hunting culture. The closest I got to hunting growing up was living by a neighbor with a coon dog who nightly howled at the moon. But I have always wanted to become an upland hunter. My second son has stoked the flame of this desire by recently purchasing his first shotgun. So I decided to proceed how I normally do when I am faced with a knowledge deficit—I read a book. And what a book it was. “The Orvis Guide to Upland Hunting “ by Reid Bryant is exceptionally written. Bryant thankfully assumed the reader would know very little about upland hunting. Reading this book is like having a kind and experienced mentor lead you into the tradition rich world of upland hunting. The book is also notable for having beautiful, thick pages that contain amazing photographs of upland hunters, their dogs, and the beautiful birds they pursue. Even if you never intend to hunt game birds you would greatly enjoy this book. I would write more but I have a shotgun to purchase! Happy reading.

A beautiful overview of both the technicalities and the poetic beauties of upland bird hunting. It covers various birds, guns, dogs, field dressing, conservation, and attire. Mixed with the how are the whys and loads of beautiful photographs.
