Simple book with a strong purpose. Ed Strauss, accomplished author, has given followers of Jesus a basic book on Bible memorization. This 224-page inexpensive softback is not printed for durability, but usability at two different levels: memorization and devotion.
The first few short chapters introduce the why, way and what of Scripture memorization. Not only is remembering holy writ directed in the Bible, but individual verses must be held in their context, and so it is important to have a daily Scripture reading habit. Further, the author maps out the benefits of memorization and then lays out 9 simple tips for retaining verses. I found this exhortation very meaningful, “Seek to feel the text, remind yourself that it will change you, and think deeply about its power and meaning. This will engage your emotions” (18).
Then Strauss lays out 144 verses to learn by heart, put together under specific topics with a topical index on the last pages for easy finding. He has them spelled out in both the KJV and NIV. And each verse to be held on to is encased in a short devotion. Not only will the passage be retained - especially by using the regimen he recommends, but a reader will find the practice a devotional experience. When I first picked up the book and wondered if I should purchase it, this was what jumped out at me. For the valiant, the volume ends with longer sections of holy Scripture, as well as additional memory verses.
At the end of the day “A Genesis to Revelation Scripture Memory Guide” is an easy-to-use manual. For anyone struggling to retain Scripture, you will find this book a big help. It would also be ideal for discipline relationships and personal growth. I highly recommend the book.
I really enjoyed this book on scripture memorization. I can see myself rereading it again in the future. It was a quick read, but had good information.

A Genesis to Revelation Scripture Memory Guide By Ed Strauss The first few chapters of this book are short but important. They share the importance of memorization, as well as what Jesus memorized, tips on memorizing scripture, and a brief overview of the Bible. I liked how the comparison of translation is encouraged and used to learn to study the Bible. The meat of the book, however, is scripture and begins to read more like a topical reference. There are 144 scriptures shared throughout this book. God said, “These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) and “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul (Deuteronomy 11:18).” I enjoyed the beginning chapters of the book more than the topical references as I already have many topical reference books… including Google. It was still a great book and something I would give as a gift in the future. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This book provides tips on scripture memorization and a collection of important Bible verses for memorization. He started off by explaining why it's important to memorize Scripture, and he gave nine tips about scripture memorization. He then gave an overview of the Bible, going book by book. He also talked about the different Bible translations. Most of the book was a collection of verses that he suggested for memorization along with commentary about the verse so you can better understand the intent and context. He provided verses about salvation, walking with God, the character of God, and things like worship, love, prayer, peace, suffering, and so forth. I had hoped for more information about how to better memorize the Bible verses, but this is a good resource if you want a collection of Bible verses to memorize.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
It's odd. I can remember a song by hearing it only twice but, Oh, how I struggle to remember the Scriptures. So when I had the opportunity to get this free copy from Netgalley (in exchange for my honest review) I jumped at the chance.
Through the past forty years as a Christian, I have read several books of this nature to help me hide God's word in my heart. This book is definitely helpful in accomplishing that goal. We need to get our noses into the Word and make sure we have a good solid foundation in it so we can face the future with confidence and without fear. That's exactly what this book does. It helps you to lay a memory foundation so that you can continue above and beyond to continue to memorize even more on your own. (One never knows when access to a Bible might not be possible.)
A worthy endeavor and a worthy book to help that I can wholeheartedly recommend.
A slow read, not because it's bad, but because I really want to take my time and learn the verses of Scripture off by heart.
Ed Strauss offers up some great suggestions of how to memorize Scripture and offers up 110 examples of verses to learn off by heart chosen from every book in the Bible. I preferred making my own decisions of which verses to learn off by heart, but his examples are a great selection to start with, for people who might perhaps not have the same Biblical background.
However, my absolute favourite part of the book were the 3-4 lines of introduction Ed Strauss wrote about every single book of the Bible. It makes for a really comprehensive guide and background to your reading.
This book is great if you want to gather important Bible verses to memorise. You will find 144 essential verses in chapter 7, with accompanying brief commentaries. The actual verse is printed and are in KJV and NIV only. If you use other versions, you will have to refer to your own Bible (not too difficult to do.)
Chapter 8 has information on longer passages and chapters to commit to memory.
Additional important memory verses is in chapter 9 (Verses only and no commentary.)
The topical index at the back of the book is useful when you want to find specific verses to memorise based on topic.
I love this book and hope to put it to good use.
Thank you Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for the review copy. This is my honest opinion.
The description actually gives a pretty good overview of what is all packed into this book, but I must say I was supposed how surprising valuable and useful this resource is! Not just how to but why and with emotion not just boring write and repeat because you should. A really great resource for all true believers! And really great price!
Very good book for all in their religious walk.I liked that this book took time to explain scriptures and a way to memorize the teachings outlined in this book. Very good resource. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.
I recommend this book to any person looking to grow in knowledge and faith. This highly valuable and useful book is vital in any Christian Libary. Ed Strauss gives an overview of the Bible, explains the verses. teaches ways to memorize and why we should memorize.
One of the best books I’ve read on the subject of Scripture Memory. It could probably serve as a Devotional as well as suggestions for great passages to memorize. Highly recommended for those who are trying to learn more scripture by memory.
