Civilization's twilight approaches, with none aware of the impending peril. What if the savior of the human species was not Jewish, Christian or Muslim? What if he was not even a good man? Spanning decades, the tale of the life of Julian Andreas Würger carries him from child to man to monster to king, the subject of a bitter prophecy which he knows he cannot hope to evade. In him are commingled both hope and horror, truth and terror, and all that he touches is forever changed. Violence brings forth violence; how then can peace prevail, in this, the End of Days? St. John of Patmos wrote of a cycle's ending. the Fifth Horseman speaks of the final portent, of that which even St. John could not bear to write. For all that lives must one day die, and the hubris of mankind must be razed to its foundations for order to rise anew from chaos and fire.
For a first offering, the author grabs you from the very first page and takes you on an epic journey through the protagonists life from child to man, from monster to King, and even though he is indeed a monster in his own way, still has you rooting for him to come through every time.
The story she weaves is intricate and certainly gets the brainbox ticking as her very real world declines into a nightmare that is all too possible in our own reality.
Brilliantly done, well written, a real treasure for readers who love to lose themselves inside the imagination of others.
This was a riveting read from start to finish. The apocalyptic nature of the story is disturbingly ominous right now, given the events that are taking place in the world. It was like a chilling peek into a future that could become reality, with a paranormal twist added.
The worst thing I can be when reading horror is bored. Unfortunately that happened a lot, though I didn’t even make it past 50%. At first, I was engaged. I liked the bones of the story and the writing is interesting. But holy hell is this excessively long. Things got repetitive and started dragging so much that I kept putting it down, thinking I could finish later. After six months of taking up one of my KU slots, it’s time to part ways. With a major editing overhaul this would have potential. But as is I wouldn’t recommend unless you have endless reserves of patience.
I originally purchased this novel to support a fellow writer and Facebook friend. But by the time I read through the first chapter, I was hooked. The author has woven a rich and glorious tale, full of incredible characters and situations. Julian is an amazing character, someone who knows his own mind, and is not afraid to explore his talents and his emotions. The character development is beyond words...I found myself hating a character, and then weeping when they shifted loyalties and eventually perished. This story was so good that I haven't gotten much sleep since I started it. It has been too hard to stop reading. I really, really hope that there are more tales of Julian and his family and court to follow. I could read about them for the rest of my life. You wrote an incredible story, Samantha, and don't ever let anyone tell you any differently.
This has been sitting on my kindle app for months as my brain wasn't ready yet. Finally got myself a real kindle and this was the first book I opened. Good thing I have a strong stomach. I probably giggled at parts others would find disturbing. Always nice to find authors with wonderfully twisted imaginations. Highs and lows. Ups and downs. I have lost many hours of sleep finishing this book. I don't regret a single one.
I could not put this book down. It is a masterpiece in the post-apocalyptic horror genre. Filled with compelling characters and situations as a terrible prophecy comes to pass with horrid results for humanity, and a mighty savior arising from the most unlikely of places.
If you have not read this, you should. And buy it, please.
