Mark Chen is the go-to guy for learning computer technology and programming as he demonstrates in this easily accessible (even for computer luddites!) book on learning Python Programming. Knowing that many of his readers will not even have a clue as to the topic name, Mark explains form the top in a fashion that is easy to grasp and that technique of communication persists throughout this book. No easy task, but Mark is more than up to the challenge.
From his opening Introductory remarks he sets the tone – ‘The Python Programming language stands alongside the top-rated and most widely used programming languages out there due to its simplicity and versatility. That makes it a very easy language to pick up and implement into the real world to digitally carve out solutions to real life issues. If you are eagerly chomping at the bit to jump into the world of programming, then this is what you will want to learn! And the best part of Python is that applications written by this particular language are often five times shorter than Java and almost ten times shorter than C + +!’ But knowing we still may be in the dark about the title, he comfortably explains what Python is: ‘ Python is widely regarded as being the “Right Tool for the Job” thanks to its extremely versatile capabilities, which makes it on par with any of the high-level programming languages out there. The language can also be extended and/ or embedded as a tool for writing macros. The flexibility of Python ultimately makes it a great option for solving both high and low
level programs, but due to some of its minor drawbacks, the prowess of this language drops down a bit when trying to deal with some specific computing tasks.
Explaining why it works so well Mark lists the ability to act as a scripting language (‘script’ is essentially a program which gives you the ability to control other programs – like human mind control device but for the computer), the father of statement grouping, high level data compatibility, the power to utilize plugins and extensions, a form of interpreted language, the built-in text manipulation system, and the no compile-time checking. ‘Python is often regarded as a multi-paradigm programming language, which basically means that it is comprised of multiple programming philosophies packed in one language.’
In this intense but user-friendly book Mark teaches us What is Python, The Various Components of Python Programming, The Three D’s (documentation, efficient design, and debugging), How to deal with Strings, What are Lists and Tuples, How to take control of your program, How to work in-depth with functions, Classes and Object Oriented Programming etc.
While much of this is gobbledygook to many, to those who are headed into computer programming it is a veritable bible. Lots of information clearly explained, but not for the unmotivated casual reader! For the smart ones with career goals in this field, this is a ‘must have.’
