Taylor Hodges, field producer of Hollywood’s hottest reality show, Marry Me, hires Larabee Investigations after someone tries to kill her while scouting next season’s filming location in Arizona. Maxine Larabee hopes solving the celebrity’s case might end her company’s financial struggle, and at the same time prove to her lead investigator, Jace Atmore, she has what it takes to be a good detective.
But she has a bigger problem than just trying to prove her investigative abilities to a man with whom she’s attracted and probably falling for. The strongest lead in Taylor’s case trails straight to an ex-contestant of Marry Me, Lemon Beauchamp, a woman who’s engaged to His Royal Highness Prince Dante of Monterra. Getting to question her might be more difficult than keeping Taylor alive, or getting Jace’s respect.
Debra Erfert lives in the southwest desert city of Yuma, Arizona with her husband, a retired police lieutenant, where the average summer temperatures are well above 100 degrees--truly hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. After raising two Eagle Scout sons, she now spends her time writing and shooing her polydactyl cat away from her keyboard. She's an award-winning artist who discovered she could use words to create pictures instead of just oils.

This was a fun, quick read! I'm a huge fan of the Royals of Monterra series by Sariah Wilson, but this is the first spin-off book I've read for the series. It was fun returning to the world Ms. Wilson created, but with totally new characters. I thought it fit into the Monterra world pretty seamlessly and we even get cameos from other Monterra characters.
Maxine is a P.I. and is hired by Taylor Hodges to help figure out who is trying to kill her. I liked Maxine and her crew. I thought this was entertaining, but a little too short. It ended a bit abruptly and I still had a few questions and I was left hanging with the whole Maxine and Jace storyline. I'm hoping there will be follow-up books, because I'd love to see what happens next.
I borrowed It Takes a Sleuth from the Kindle Unlimited program.
Maxine Larabee inherited Larabee Investigations when he husband died and became an investigator. Late one night Taylor Hodges, a Hollywood assistant producer for a reality show called at midnight saying she feared for her life.
This started an investigation with a car chasing the two women and shooting at them. A trip to California ruled out two possible suspects, and then the emails were traced to a surprising suspect and a dramatic ending to solve Taylor's problem. It also revealed another possible threat to Max and ended with a cliffhanger that could start another book about Maxine and her investigators.
Stunning little read that had me guessing and saying, that is how I think sometimes and left me wanting to read more! So I hope you come back with these characters!
With minor characters we knew and loved, the story begins with a bang...literally. With the gun being aimed at Max who calls to Jace for help, and gets more than expected.
