Feeling like I could teach ELA to one class all day and still not have enough time to do justice to all of the components suggested in the workshop. But I'm looking forward to implementing next year with as much fidelity as I can in my allotted time!
If you want nearly 200 pages of theory on teaching reading, this book is for you. If you want specifics on HOW to manage a classroom whilst implementing Reader's Workshop, like practical advice, look elsewhere! If you are a fan of Lucy Calkins and truly wish to follow the Reader's Workshop model, it would take several years to get it right. That would mean a lot of piloting and trial-and-error, and as an educator that prospect frightens me. A teacher of nothing but language arts might be able to follow her sage advice. As for someone who teaches five subjects a day, it's not realistic to follow this to a T.
There is a treasure trove of excellent information in this book buried under a verbose, cumbersome writing style. Reading this book makes me wish for a second chance with certain students from previous years. I will certainly be a better teacher, thanks to the golden nugget ideas. There is an opportunity here for a strong editor to excavate and reveal the hidden gems, so more teachers (and students!) will be able to benefit from them.
