I've skimmed this book and it looks like it will do the title's subject, teach you to use Maya, there is a fully functional free version, and it's widely used in the gaming industry. Has a good associated website. I've read scores, if not hundreds of tech books in my career, so it's fairly easy for me to sort out the crap books from the can do the job books.
