In this 17 page booklet you will learn how to make a bow in its simplest and most beautiful form…the self bow. I live in the northeast and so I will go over many different types of trees that I have used personally that thrive here and you will usually find all over the u.s. Along with this booklet and the minimal of hand tools you will have the “know how” to help you build functional tools for shooting, hunting, or just learning primitive skills at your own pace. Included are some great tips that were passed on from some respected elders and family that I am sure will carry you far in your primitive bow making journey!
Its obvious that Burleigh loves bows, and if you are really determined you might have enough info here to build one of your own. Just know that the process seems vague, there are no useful illustrations, and that the operative word in the title is "primitive". A good corrective editing would have been a wonderful idea, too. I enjoyed the author's attitude as well as his method of choosing bow wood, but other than "Scrape the limbs until they look right and the poundage suits you" there isn't much instruction. Without a person to guide you, video is the best way to learn bow making. There are some fine books out there, but there is nothing like seeing it done.
