Mediocrity Is Not An Option by Robert M. Chiusano book review, 12/19/14
The passion Robert Chiusano conveys for his message of owning responsibility for your career success and the compassionate way he leads his readers through the specific steps make Mediocrity Is Not An Option a valuable motivational guide for anyone wishing to be successful in their career and life.
This well-crafted and inspirational part guidebook, part memoir read like a novel I didn’t want to put down. With raw honesty and a sense of humor, Chiusano skillfully engaged me in the process of examining my own skills (skill inventory), the foundation of his program, with provocative reflections such as, “You are not only what you think you are; you also become a force for others based on how they see you.” (xxiv) From there he walked me through a systematic approach of setting goals, developing a career development plan with written, tangible goals and analyzing the feedback. Throughout it all, he emphasized the importance of listening, being open to constructive feedback and remaining accountable for one’s own career path. Brief quotes highlighted throughout the text reinforce his main points. Although I am retired from my nursing career, his writing inspired me to reflect on my own career path, both the mistakes and successes. It was an enjoyable easy read that resonated with my own experiences. This is not just about job skills. It’s about life skills.
What separates this career development guide from others is the interweaving of the author’s own pathway to success from a misguided, angry young man to a successful COO of a Fortune 500 company. His lived experience and his willingness to openly share how he turned his mistakes into personal and professional successes lend credibility and a human dimension to his story.
While the focus of this book is on a professional career, I feel anyone who wants to “learn, have fun and make a positive difference in everything they do” will benefit from the wisdom, experience and direction of this author. I highly recommend Mediocrity Is Not An Option.
