Not an easy read. However, an essential read. Brilliant writing in the language, the words, of the characters, their thought process, speaking their experience as slaves in the 1690's, but not all black. There is a Native American, Lina, a black slave girl, Florens, given as payment for a debt, a free black blacksmith, never enslaved, a white girl , 11 years old, Sorrow, who lived her life on a sailing vessel, washed up on shore after the boat wrecking, the wife, Rebecca, arriving in America, sent by her parents replying to an advertisement in a British Newspaper for an American, Jason Vaark, who wanted a wife. The revelation is how in early America so many were enslaved. In this story, Rebecca, the wife, Lina, Florens, Sorrow and two black slaves who come to the Varrk property. Challenging to read, lots rereading, and researching characters on line to help me understand what I was reading.
