“Everyone I’ve ever loved has been taken from me and I can’t take the heartache anymore. It’s time to build that wall around my heart and let no one in, no exceptions.” Ellie never did know her mother; before she turned twenty she lost her father in the line of duty; a freak accident stole her fiancé from her before they had a chance to start their life together. She wants answers, but now that she’s living in a new town and trying to start over, she’s finding that it’s not that easy. Maybe new surroundings are what she needs to make it easier to move on and forget all about her old life. It could have been…until he showed up. “Having the sort of job that is as dangerous as what I do doesn’t allow for a personal life, no exceptions.” Jack and his team of military misfits have seen their fair share of war zones and violent criminals. Skilled in precision rescue operations, they’ve traveled into some of the most terrifying countries and stood up to intimidating adversaries, but when a mentor of Jack’s calls them in for a favor that he is unable to turn down, he finds himself up against his most challenging fear of all…his heart. There is a fine line between getting close enough to do your job and getting so close that you get attached. That line used to be obvious, but now that he’s met her, things have blurred and priorities have shifted. Can he keep his feelings in check and still protect Ellie from an adversary more dangerous and twisted than she could ever imagine?
Oh My Word!! Debut author…and she smashed it! I read many debut novels and I have to say this is right up there with some of the best I have ever read. Not only is the writing quite beautiful, it flows from start to finish and captures the reader right from the start. It’s a very descriptive book but not in a mind numbing way, it serves to tell the story of Jack and Ellie in an extremely comprehensive way. The characters are so well developed that the connection the reader feels is almost mesmerising. Gah, I loved this and I don’t say that too often about many books. It’s certainly a book that makes you think. I didn’t write any notes for my review as I was so engrossed in the plot and characters I just didn’t want to disturb my reading flow. I think many readers will feel the same. I think my only gripe about this book was of the character Lucy and while I know how she fits into the story I still didn’t find her character all too redeeming to begin with. She has this jealous streak which she doesn’t hide. Eventually things do come good with Lucy and those hidden fears the reader has are wiped away but you carry that suspicion throughout! Jack is a guy you love to hate but love him you will. He has rough edges and an arm’s length approach when it comes to Ellie but to see their relationship go from strength to strength is really something. They both battle with their trust and Ellie is such a stubborn woman, sometimes it feels as if she has but one goal and you want to reach into the pages and give her a good, hard shake. The story and plot lines are intense and there’s a few twists and turns to whet your appetite and keep you on the edge of your seat. I liked that it was adrenalin packed but has softness in some places, balancing it out to the perfect romantic suspense that it is. The soft-ish cliff-hanger doesn’t leave you with much except that desire to have more so I hope that it is in the making as we speak as I really need to see where this is going. It certainly isn’t the end of the story by any means! Well done, fantastic book and very worthy of a 5 star rating. Highly recommended!!
Ellie is broken. She has lost the 2 men she has loved the most in her life, her father and her fiancé. She decides to move to a new town to start a new beginning but something is bugging her and she decides she wants answers to the many questions that are swirling in her head.
The only problem is her questions are taking her to close to a truth that someone does not want revealed and her life is suddenly in danger.
When Jack takes the call from a man that he looks up to and he is asked to look after and protect a woman whose life is in danger, he knows that there is more to it and accepts the offer. Jack is former military and is highly trained and skilled so protecting a woman will be easy for him.
Jack starts to have feelings Ellie and his judgement starts to get cloudy. He does what he has to do to protect and decides to walk away to keep her safe, but will this put her in more danger and will he regret his decision to walk away? Ellie has already lost 2 men in her life, will she be able to let go of the pain and fear of losing another man and allow Jack into her heart?
I really liked this book. It was an easy free flowing read that could be finished in one sitting quite easily. The suspense element added to the heightened state of mystery as to what secret was being hidden and whether Ellie or Jack would get hurt or not. Ellie was such a strong character for all that she had been through and the fact that she didn’t back down when faced with danger, made me like her all that more.

You have Ellie, who has lost her father and fiancé and has this phobia of getting into a car. She is strong and independent. She knows something is up with her father’s death and she wants answers. The kind of answers that will get you killed.
In comes Jack. He is protecting Ellie as a favor to his father and Lou. What he doesn’t count on is getting to know Ellie and falling in love with her.
Like a said the book was amazing, it felt believable and you went on the ride of getting to know Jack and Ellie as they got to know each other. The chemistry was there and you just knew Ellie would be pissed when she found out she was being lied to.
Now what took me for a loop was when the shit hit the fan. Now mind you Ellie is a grown woman an if she doesn’t want to be somewhere, she has that right. She leaves and goes back to California not knowing what waits for her there. When Jack catches up to her, he ends up explaining everything and she gives him the slip again. And again she is a grown as woman.
Everybody made it seem like it was Jack’s fault. It wasn’t in my book and they seriously pissed me off when they made him believe it and then when he steps back from the situation because they told him he was getting to close, don’t and I mean don’t get pissed at him when he’s doing what the hell you wanted him to.
I really do hope that there is another book because the ending left me with so many questions.
I was hooked with the first chapter. Ellie is a very strong willed woman that wants things her way and a past that quickly catches up to her. Jack tries to do his job and watch over Ellie but he gets more than he bargained for when he starts falling for her. Jack tries to keep Ellie safe but when his judgement is questioned he leaves Ellie in order to protect her. Jack and Ellie are two very strong willed characters that try to fight the connection they have but once they figure out what they have with each other it maybe too late.
The story leaps into a mysterious investigation of the death of an undercover police officer. The story is focused on a dramatic criminal investigation with a romantic backstory. Ellie, the daughter of the deceased officer, has a terrible phobia. It has completely over taken her life and is the main focus of the books early development. A super sexy undercover body guard is posing as her camera man. Jack is hilarious and even he struggles to get Ellie to deal with her phobia of cars. Humorous hijinks of Jack trying to lure Ellie into cars- I would have broken immediately when he showed up with Burger, fries, onion rings, a thick chocolate milkshake and a surprise dessert! Come on Ellie! Typically though, she passes out, sweats or even pukes- her fears are debilitating since a car accident that left her boyfriend dead.
Ellie is as scared of cars as I am of Chucky the evil doll! If you like a quirky neurotic heroine Ellie's your girl-think Nancy Drew or Veronica Mars, in the end she always solves the case. * “Did your dad know you were working cases when you were seventeen? And dating boys he’d never met?” I laughed because that was funny shit. “Well, technically I was sixteen at the time. Dad trusted my judgment, and there weren’t that many boys. Just one.” I noticed a hint of anguish in her voice. “Of course my dad knew about my cases. He’s the one who got me my license. I’d been using it since I was, like, fifteen. And I had a fake ID that dad didn’t want to know anything about so, technically, I was a legal adult.”
Jack is a patient, super sexy, undercover operative who just so happened to have "hooked up" with Ellie's best friend in the academy. Girl code alert! The fun is always in how an author gets two polar opposites to come together and leaves you with a feeling that anyone can have a happily ever after-even a severe car phobic. "I watched as Ellie scurried down the road. For once in my life, I was stunned, frozen in place, and I couldn’t figure out what to do next. My head was clouded with the last few minutes…the feel of her in my arms, a playful gleam in her eyes, her sweet breath, and her nails up into my scalp. I didn’t know whether to run after her or just let her go to sort out what just happened. What had just happened? It was just a kiss, wasn’t it?" First kiss at 49% for those of you who require sexy times by 2% this is not that book. Sweetly romantic- yes at times. Warning! There is no happily ever after here. The author does not state if there will be a part 2, although I assume there will be. At the conclusion of the story, Jack and Ellie head off to their own investigations. Ellie is still seeking justice for her fathers death and Jack is headed to Russia with his team. Three and a half stars for the storyline. One star for heat. This is not my typical genre and I hope I did it justice for those who enjoy a contemporary regency style novel.
Rule Number One: Never lose focus. Rule Number Two: Keep a professional distance. Rule Number Three: Never fall for your client.
It took all of one look for Jack to break the basic rules of survival for a trained undercover professional like himself. Ellie is fiery, bull-headed and her own worst enemy as she seeks out whoever is responsible for the deaths of both her fiancé and her father and has sent her into one nightmare after another, repeating the fiery crash that killed the man she was going to marry. Is it survivor’s guilt or does she believe she was the intended target? Always under the watchful eye of her father’s best friend, she has no one but herself to rely on, until another new cameraman is sent to work with her on her reporting assignments and he will NOT leave.
Jack must protect Ellie at all costs, but can he without revealing his identity? Everything Ellie has grown up knowing may all be a lie as she becomes targeted by evil who want more from her than just her life.
The Only Exception: Broken by A.L. Davis crept up on me as I discovered the depth of this author’s writing ability! Not your typical romantic suspense thriller, the action is non-stop as Ellie is protected from a world she is unaware of by a man who, at first, seemed a little full of himself, but who has learned what buttons to push to get Ellie to trust him. Besides, he IS as good as he thinks, but what if this woman causes him to lose focus?
A.L. Davis hit the ground running, filling each page with suspense, emotion and huge, HUGE revelations that could unglue the best of us! From the car chase scene and beyond, buckle in, this is one crazy ride as the good guys try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys and the “prize” proves to be as slippery as a greased pig for everyone. A.L. Davis knows how to write dialogue that feels real, rings true and adds to the twisted trip we are taken on. Like suspense? Like uncertain outcomes? Like a romance that is NOT the main theme, but feels like a natural event spinning off from the tension? It’s all here!
I received this copy from A. L. Davis in exchange for my honest review.

I had such high expectations for this book after reading the fabulous attention grabbing blurb, indeed even the going into the actual reading of the first chapter I was hooked, it was edgy and suspenseful with enough mystery and intrigue injected into the plot that initially I was dying to uncover all of the sordid details and secrets but something got lost in translation. It never kept up with that burst of energy and suspense, somewhere around the halfway mark everything took a slight nose dive and rather than a steady pace we seemed to have been trapped in a never ending loop of tears, running away, hiding and a few unbelievable plot twists.
The two main protagonists worked well up to a point. Ellie our intrepid heroine has suffered severely throughout her young life and as a result is contending with a pretty severe case of PTSD in which Jack our hero with a secret identity, attempts to help her overcome, through perseverance and with the aid of his hero complex he forms a friendship with the struggling woman which inevitably becomes more. However in the entirety of the book, they kiss only once. That is literally it. No more kisses. No sex and not even an inkling of sexual tension in the air, it was too tame and focused entirely too much on unnecessary details.
‘“Jack, I…,” she started to interrupt, lifting her head to look me in the eyes. “No Ellie, it’s okay,” I shushed, quietly. “This is really the only way you’ll get better. Don’t be afraid to let it out. I don’t mind one bit. So…,” I rubbed a hand up and down her back as I started singing again, “Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing ‘cause every little thing is gonna be alright.” Leaning her head back down into the crook of my neck Ellie relaxed into me and took a deep breath, clearing her throat. “Thanks, Jack.”
All the elements needed to make this a great story are there but like I mentioned, something gets lost along the way. The majority of the book is basically Ellie locking herself away in a room, crying as Jack tries to talk her round. Thankfully around the three quarter mark it does pick up again with a lot more danger and action and where a few questions finally get answered only to leave us with more questions again as the blasted book ends on a cliffhanger with no resolutions in sight. It was fairly well written and I can definitely detect a lot of potential but unfortunately it wasn’t very apparent in the lay out or the pace, it seemed a bit scattered and erratic. ~Nicole
This is a story about a woman who has had a terrible few years and several losses in her life. She has a friend who is looking out for her and he has assigned someone to protect her. Jack and Ellie get close where he becomes her friend and possibly more. Lucy (who is Ellie’s next door neighbour) and Ellie are the best of friends and tell each other everything, Jack comes along into Ellie’s life and Lucy does her best to warn Ellie off him due to history that Ellie is unaware of. Jack is struggling with his own battles, Ellie is meant to be a job but he just can’t help but make this one personal.
The main characters were Ellie and Jack. Lucy and Lou both feature a lot too. Of all of the characters I liked Jack the best, he opened up to Ellie and helped her overcome battles that no-one else could, he was her guardian angel. I could relate to all of the characters and their personal battles. The most credible character was in my opinion, Lucy. If you have lost anyone in your life you can relate to the panic and stress she suffers, the constant feeling of will life ever be the same? Why has this happened to me?
I felt the book was an easy read and the story was exciting once it got going. Some parts I felt had a little too much detail and you just wanted to carry on with what was happening in the book. My favourite part of the book was when Jack and his colleagues go to rescue Ellie, this was very well written and I found myself nervous about what they would find. This being said, the end of the book disappointed me, nothing really happened at the end. I definitely would have changed it to leave a bigger cliff hanger.
I would recommend this book as a good holiday book, an easy read and you are able to pick up where you are if you put it down. It’s a great book for someone who enjoys romance with some drama thrown in.
Who is A L Davis? Well, A L Davis is the author of this superb book. Its a detailed book that will make you stand in awe part way through with the exceptional story. I've not read such a brilliant all rounded story like this for a bit, one that is not like any others lately that have become 'fashionable' to write.
This one has depth, it makes you think, it makes you worry about Ellie that's for sure!
Ellie looses her fiancé in one freak accident. The last time she had heard her Fathers voice was when he left a message on her phone. She was too busy to answer at the time. She has lost him too in the line of duty. Two deaths, two men she loved. Her heart broken.
But she wants answers. Digging deep and asking questions in a new town she has moved to, is she asking the wrong people?
Jack is called in to keep a watch on her, she may be in danger.
Jack is armed, he has been trained. He knows what is what.
But trying to protect Ellie, is not an easy thing to do.
When feelings come into play, does judgement cause error, will error cause misjudgment?
This is what I would deem a "turn the page" kind of read, one after the other, because its hard to leave this book alone once you are way deep up to your neck in it.
I am so glad I joined the blog tour for this fab book.
Thank you A.L . Davis for getting my heart rate and blood pressure up! I forgot how much I love a good mystery spiced up with a little romance. I thought I would figure it out before the end. Pfft nope didn't happen! I do love when I'm wrong, but I hate cliffhangers! They turn me into a psycho stalker! This is told in a dual POV. I particularly enjoy being able to see into both main characters minds. Ellie is definitely going through some serious emotional turmoil that she can't control. She's trying to deal as best she knows how and Jack just throws a monkey wrench in that whole situation! It was exhilarating watching these to fall for each other and not even know it. This story keeps you on your toes at all times all the way to the end, at the same time holding your interest so you can't put it down until you find out what happens next! I will be pining for the next book to find out just that. 5BadAssDirtyMysteriouslyPerfectStars

This book is very well written. It contains good suspense, drama, and love. The characters are complex people with real hurts, and fears, even phobias.
The story is about Ellie, who has lost her father and fiance. She goes to her father's friend to work as a reporter. She feels at times like someone is watching her, but she ignores it because she is just a normal person. Jack is hired to be her camera man. She has successfully gotten rid of every other hired by Lou. When her world starts falling apart, she finds out not everyone is who the say they are. Evil men are trying to get back what her father took from them, but she is clueless as to what that is.
This is an interesting, attention grabbing, good read. You can't go wrong with it.

Broken: the only exception By A. L Davis ** arc Received for honest review** Ellie is fragile very broken, edgy and had a bit of a shitta of the past 3 years or so. Her father was killed her fiancé was killed and Ellie is set off to find what happen to them and who killed them. Jack is sent in undercover operative at the start to protect her, to help her, to be her friend.... but things can get a bit complicated...... This book has a wave of mystery but just didn't do it for us, somethings were a bit farfetched and yes we understand it's a book but your dad giving you a fake ID and giving her cases to work at the age of 16 mmmm don't think so. We didn't get taken to the place where we were feeling with this book it didn't hold our attention. The book has a good story line but just wasn't for us.
I was given an ARC on behalf of "Bookalicious Babe's Blog" in exchange for an honest review. This is my first book by A.L Davis and definitely won't be my last. This is a book about one broken woman and the man that loves her. Let's begin with Ellie, she really broke my heart. Losing the man she loved and her father was not easy, but through all that Ellie was still strong. I really loved that about her character. She was a fighter, no matter what life threw her way. Then enters Jack; protective, sexy, sweet, caring and swoon worthy. Even though he lied to Ellie, you can tell she was everything to him. Their connection and chemistry was off the charts. If you're looking for a story about love, loss and a second chance this is the book for you.
