Are women brighter than men? Mark Munro thinks so, and he has the facts to prove it! In this hilarious autobiography of a kept man, Munro decides that the newly dominant female sex has earned all the rights and privileges that were once the exclusive property of men. Most important is the right to keep mistresses, or in their case, boy toys. “Why not?” Munro asks. “Women have the power, the money, and the spare time that once was the exclusive property of the Old Boys Club. Why shouldn’t they use it the way men always did?”
Munro’s problem is that through no fault of his own he has become the property of three amorous cougars. mistresses were always clever enough to manage an army of sugar daddies, but men can’t cope with such complications. With scheme after scheme, he tries to keep the ladies apart. But, the best laid plans of men inevitably backfire, leaving him the helpless victim of feminine outrage. His only hope is a large dose of catnip.
I had a mixed response to the book. At times I thoroughly enjoyed the farce, but at other times it felt over-the-top.
I love the premise of Catnip and the beginning immediately drew me in. Overall, it was well-written and had an easy-to-read flow. Many of the situations made me root for Mark and almost cover my eyes at the disasters that ensued. And it was funny! But some of the more extreme things (Homeland Security’s Involvement, for example) seemed to take it all too far.
I felt like Mark was a character that was almost at odds with himself. On one hand he was a complete fool, helpless around women, unable to understand what he reads, not talented at art, but then on the other hand, he’s writing the story, he’s researched detailed history about the relationships of men and women, and he’s the genius that figured it all out—that women have evolved beyond men.
Overall, the story had many tidbits of gold was an entertaining read.
The book speaks to a modern phenomenon—that women are now the dominant sex. Reading it made me feel empowered as a woman. And of course it made me laugh a lot.
