Creation of Calm : A Cancer Survivor's Sketchbook Story

Rate this book
As a young husband, father, and artist, Mark learned he had cancer. Through two bouts of the disease that spanned four years, he chose the posture of a seeker. Even when pain and treatments stole his ability to work or focus for periods of time, he captured moments of his journey as images, thoughts, and prayers in the sketchbooks that were his constant companions. This book brings together those moving, heartfelt moments, and the result is honest art, wrenching emotions, a little humor, and authentic spirituality. Mark's story shows that even in the midst of pain and uncertainty, there can be peace and calm.

Mark and his family would sit in front of us in church before they moved out of state. It was difficult to focus on the church service as I watched Mark's sketches come to life. Now that I've read his story along with the accompanying sketches, I am amazed at his outlook on life, his talent and his willingness to share his journey. Thank you Mark. I hope you & your family are well. We miss you!

This unique book touched us, and we wanted to share it with others. With original art on every other page and sparse, well-chosen words, the author walks us through a journey that speaks on several levels. Mark Fraley's story shows the importance of contemplation and a calm center in the creative process. It shows the healing qualities of art. It demonstrates a way through trials such as cancer. It shows the importance and strengthening presence of family and friends and faith.
