Daniel William Carter is a New Zealand rugby union player.
Carter plays for Kobelco Steelers in Japan and played for New Zealand's national team, the All Blacks. He is the highest point scorer in test match rugby, and is considered by many experts as the greatest ever first five-eighth (fly-half) in the history of the game. He was named the International Rugby Board Player of the Year in 2005, 2012 and 2015 (equaling the record three awards of Richie McCaw) and has won three Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders, and nine Tri-Nations and Rugby Championships with the All Blacks.
Carter injured himself during the 2011 Rugby World Cup but was a key member of the 2015 Rugby World Cup-winning teams, becoming one of 20 players to have won multiple Rugby World Cups. In the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final against Australia, he kicked four penalties, two conversions and a drop goal, and was named the man of the match.
I enjoyed the book, though I question the decision to not use more case studies. The ending seems to be a reworking of the third chapter. The information contained in these varying versions of the third chapter are slightly different, though helpful. Perhaps in need of some editing, as well as a little lengthening of some chapters, the book does provide some clarification on gender identities. Again, I would have liked to read some more details about challenges faced by people of various gender identities. Not an unbiased approach to the book, as there is a concerted effort at a call for advocacy. This reader agrees with this approach, but readers simply looking for information, specifically conservative readers, could be put off by it. Also, I would love to read an update reflecting current politics (the book was likely completed during the previous presidential cycle). I would recommend the book to any reader curious about gender identities, while at the same time recommending an expansion of the text by the author.
