A comprehensive guide, full of practical recipes with real-life JIRA administration challenges, solutions, and examples with illustrations from the actual application. If you are an administrator who will be customizing, supporting, and maintaining JIRA for your organization, this book is for you. Familiarity with the core concepts of JIRA is essential. For some recipes, basic understanding in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript will also be helpful.
Despite a wealth of documentation about JIRA on the web, there is still value in having a book to get you started in an orderly manner. Patrick Li manages to cover the essentials and a bit more then that for sys admins who are rather at their early stages in JIRA administration. For thr more experienced, it can also serve as a quick reference for some admin tasks which are not performed too frequently. As JIRA is very quick to evolve it is also very important to note the fact that this book relates to the most recent generation (6.x), so make sure that this is the JIRA version you have before purchasing. Moreover- many of the scripts and solutions are not relevant for OnDemand instances (BTW: this fact is not clearly highlighted in those sections) For those who are more experienced with JIRA, this book may still hold few insights and gems. For example- it was only here that I learned about the specific support for troubleshooting permissions. These can mainly be found in chapters 8 and 9.
I have had significant experience administering Jira over the last 8 years. After reading through this book I can suggest that it is a good book for anyone looking to implement Jira in their organization. It will give you appropriate instructions to setup a basic install to allow your organization to begin tracking issues with your product quickly. This book also provides indications and practical examples of the power that Jira can provide via customization with some of the more common plugins to allow your organization to grow and allow you to customize the Jira tool for your specific needs. This book will provide the knowledge you will need to help you make Jira successful in your organization.
