My Date with a Book Nerd

Rate this book
“For the love of tacos and Betty White…”

I’m more than the mousy, bookish woman fading into the background at frat parties and in class. I want to be taken seriously in the English department, but that means passing the class of a notoriously difficult professor who thinks I should be earning my grades in other ways.

Miles is impossible to get along with, but he’s the only tutor with the experience I need.

When our failed tutoring assignment graduates to a fake dating arrangement, I find myself putting everything I worked for on the line for a man who can’t even be honest about his favorite book.

He’s a sullen loner who never commits to anything. I’m a people pleaser obsessed with pop culture and coffee at odd hours.

We’re complete opposites.

There’s no risk of me falling for Miles when we’re on two separate pages…

So why do we keep winding up together between the sheets?

My Date with a Book Nerd is a standalone novel.

My Date with a Book Nerd by Cassie James is an enemies to lovers, fake dating, forced proximity romance all rolled into one.

Annie needs help with her class and Miles just happens to be the only tutor who can give her a chance of actually passing Professor Parks’ class. Everything changes between the two of them the night Miles shows up to a party Annie is at.

The story is written as dual POV’s from Annie and Miles, which adds to the insights of each of the characters. The development of their relationship and everything else going on in their lives. The story is well written and a great read.

Whilst this is a standalone, I hope there’s more to come from this world.

I absolutely loved this book! It’s funny, adorable, and has just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting without overshadowing the plot. The characters are fantastic, and the banter? *Chef’s kiss!*

The dynamic between Annie and her mom gave me serious *Gilmore Girls* vibes—witty, heartfelt, and always on point. Annie is an endearing, nerdy protagonist who struggles with social interactions, especially when people don’t show her the respect she deserves. But by the end, she finds her backbone and stands up for herself in a way that’s so satisfying to watch.

And Miles? He’s officially my new favorite book boyfriend. A book lover *and* a published author? Yes, please! Especially when he wants to buy *you* books—who could resist?

I adored the way their relationship developed, from fake dating to something real. Cassie James does an incredible job of making their connection feel organic, nailing the pacing and emotional depth. The dual POV was a great touch, offering insight into both characters’ perspectives and perfectly capturing the confusion of falling for someone when you’re still figuring out your own feelings.

A special shoutout to the depiction of introverted friendships, especially between young women. Annie’s best friend is always there when she needs her, without being overbearing—a subtle but great reflection of Annie’s character.

The *enemies to lovers* trope is handled really well, balanced with just the right amount of miscommunication to keep things realistic without feeling frustrating. The family drama wasn’t my favorite part, but it added depth without distracting from the romance.

If you’re a fan of *enemies to lovers*, *fake dating*, and *grumpy/sunshine dynamics*, this book is *definitely* for you. It’s got humor, heart, and just the right amount of drama to keep you turning the pages. Perfect for a cozy weekend read—especially if you love swoon-worthy book boyfriends who will buy you books. 😉

"My Date with a Book Nerd" by Cassie James presents a classic opposites-attract, fake-dating trope with a bookish twist. However, the reader experience seems to be divided, with some finding the writing engaging, while others struggle with the plot and character development.

The premise of a mousy, pop-culture-loving student seeking tutoring from a sullen, intellectual loner has potential. The forced proximity of a fake-dating arrangement, designed to help the heroine navigate a difficult professor, sets the stage for romantic tension

Honestly, I really struggled with this one. The male lead? He just came across as a complete jerk. There wasn't anything about him that made me want to root for him, and I felt absolutely zero chemistry between him and the female lead. It's tough to get invested in a romance when you don't feel any connection between the characters.

I'll give the author credit, the writing itself wasn't bad. It was easy to read, and the sentences flowed well. But the story just didn't hold up. It felt really immature, and the plot felt flimsy. Like, the reasons for them fake-dating and living together? They were weak, and honestly, they seemed to get completely forgotten for most of the book.

It's a shame, because I think the author has potential. The writing style is there, but the story itself felt underdeveloped and juvenile. It felt like the author and I just weren't on the same page.

So, for me, it's a 2.5 out of 5 stars. The writing was okay, but the characters and plot just didn't click, and that celebrity thing was a major issue.

My Rating System:
1⭐️: The book didn’t hold my interest and/or had significant issues that overshadowed any redeeming qualities for me, but generally not my cup of tea. Most likely did not finish the book.
2⭐️: The book didn’t quite resonate with me, and while my experience wasn’t remarkable, I did finish it. It had some redeeming qualities and potential but fell short in execution. Recommendable, though with some reservations.
3⭐️: Good read, but didn’t quite stand out. Still worth recommending to others.
4⭐️: Really enjoyed it and stayed engaged throughout. Would read book again. Definitely recommendable.
5⭐️: Incredible writing that made me deeply connect with the characters. I was completely absorbed in the world and didn’t want it to end. This book stayed with me even when I wasn’t reading it. I'd gladly reread it and highly recommend it to everyone!.

Title: My Date With a Book Nerd
Author: Cassie James
Format: ebook
Genre: Romance, Fake Relationship, Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Serious: A Forced Proximity Novel (? Not sure if this is a series or not)
POV: Annie, Miles
Steam Level: Slow burn to steamy
4/5

It took me a bit to get into this story. I got irritated with both Miles and Annie (bust mostly Miles). However once this story got going I really liked it and am glad I continued with it.

Miles is prickly and judgmental. At least on the surface. Underneath his scorn for people in general (I get that) is a sweet guy who is protecting his heart.

Annie is a people pleaser who’s down on her luck with her mom. She’s a planner because her mom is more free-spirited. They were a good balance that made a lot of sense.

Together Annie and Miles balance each other - complimenting the other’s weaknesses. I like how together they are stronger and conquer the obstacles in their lives.

I received an advanced copy of this book for free. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I personally wouldn’t call this a forced proximity trope/book. There’s really no forced proximity, there’s choices and other options besides them being together.

The technical writing in this book is good. However, the premise and reasons for the characters to fake date and live together are very flimsy and not thought out that well. These reasons also seem to disappear immediately and only get mentioned again somewhere near the end like the author forgot about it a bit.

I didn’t like the mMC very much, he’s quite the AH without a lot of redeeming qualities. I also didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters and didn’t care much about the spicy scenes, which luckily weren’t the main focus.

It’s not a bad book, the writing itself is easy to get through and entertaining enough. I personally just felt like it was a little bit juvenile and could’ve used some more solid reasons for things to happen.

I can’t wait to read more of this authors work.

I loved everything about this book but let’s start with the cover depicting our book nerd Miles as well as the book blurb which definitely got my attention.

Moving on to the love of tacos and Betty White ( if you know you know )

Cassie!

I was so excited to pick up this book and read your amazing writing again.

The way you develop Miles and Annie’s relationship is actually perfect. From Annie being unsure and second guessing herself to knowing she is worthy and doesn’t have to take anything from those around her is perfectly executed.

Miles… I’ve called Miles… his change came from wanting to better himself and I’m obsessed with his taste in books.

If you’re looking for fake dating, one bed, academic read this is so the book for you. It’s light hearted and perfect and has the perfect amount of spice while still giving Gilmore girl vibes.

So well done!

This book is an absolute gem! I devoured this book in 1 day. With a quirky, bookish heroine and a gruff, brooding tutor, this enemies-to-lovers romance is full of humor, sizzling chemistry, and unexpected emotional depth. Their "fake dating" arrangement quickly turns into something much more. The witty banter and steamy moments keep things fun, but it's the heart beneath the tension that makes this book so special. A perfect read for anyone who loves swoon-worthy romance with a side of sass!

I absolutely flipping loved this book! From the crazy sayings to the snark from Miles, it is a fantastic read. I literally struggled to put it down at times when life interfered with reading. There is a certain professor who I would love to smack around for being the worst kind of idiot, but I love how that situation was eventually handled and not one, but two couples are formed in the end. I cannot wait for the next book.

This book was so good. I loved it from start to finish. The relationship Anna and her mom have is so good and I loved that they were so close. Anna and Miles are what every bookish girl dreams about. The spice was there but it didn’t overpower the actual story. The tension between the FMC and MMC was so good and the fact that he’s crazy about her from the start but tries to hide it doesn’t hurt things either! The way Miles was so in tune with Annie and could tell when things weren’t right was excellent! I would be happy to read more about these two if the author had drawn out their story or if she were to write more books about them. I would highly recommend!

This was my first book by Cassie James and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The characters had depth, the plot was well written, the sexual chemistry was high and had just the right amount of angst. The was humor there as well, which only added to the depth of the character's personalities and their relationships. Well done.

This book is perfect if you want a fun book with great banter between the characters. There were a few times I giggled with the back and forth between Annie and Miles.

Who doesn’t love a god fake relationship that has a HEA as well? Miles was so sarcastic but in the best ways possible and Annie and her mom were so cute!!!

This is probably the cutest real-life-situation style book I've read. I absolutely loved it. Annie is a high-achieving people pleaser, and Miles is a high-achieving anti-social type, which makes them perfect for each other!!.

DNF. Reason# 7654 to not feature celebrities in books. Blake Lively falsely accused Justin of sexual harrasment, she is trying to ruin his career, and you put her in your book. Ugggh, I can't support an author who supports shitty mean girls.

My date with a book nerd was not the story I thought it was going to be and I really liked that it wasn't.

Annie (FMC) finds herself in a difficult position when she starts failing in her course and looks for help from Miles. A guy who seems hell bent on not helping her. He seems to have written her off before he'd gotten to know her. As the book progressed and they got to know each other their sweet banter grew. Its that dynamic that I loved in this book. Yes it was steamy in parts but also witty too. It was a good read that I really enjoyed reading.

This book had me from the first page - straight away I was invested and wanted to know how it all turned out!

Annie needed a tutor to help her with a class her professor made her think she was failing and Miles was the broody, moody guy she got. Though the whole “professor/boyfriend’s dad’s attitude/secret family” themes are not typically my favourites in novels, I didn’t mind them so much in this book. They worked with the whole storyline and I think the interaction between Annie and her mum, as well as Annie and Miles more than made up for it.

I really enjoyed Blue (Annie) and Miles together - especially once he got over himself- and there are some well written steamy scenes also. Annie’s mum is a great side character too.

Not sure about the title of the book, but would definitely recommend a read.
