Think of this as the Cliff’s Notes for German history. That’s what I was looking for instead of a 500 page tome. I just needed to understand the overall picture and key moments before visiting Germany. This book was very helpful for that purpose. However, I felt the beginning and ending of each chapter were somewhat redundant. It was like reading a student research paper or theme paper where they were required to clearly state what each chapter would cover and then summarize each chapter at the end. As the book progressed, it felt less factual and more conceptual, ideological, and even the author’s own opinion about Germany and its future. I would have preferred a little more detail and less “talking.”
