Ooffff... Where do I start? First of all, the book does have a few triggers so if you're thinking of reading it I would suggest going through them
Right from the start you get to know the person that is Harper and then her alters. Isabella has done an amazing job of giving each alter a personification of themselves while also keeping them true to Harper. Other than Harper there are also other characters that you will absolutely fall in love with ... And also those that you will hate.. but then there's also the characters in the middle ground where you don't know how to feel about them - and personally it keeps me hooked!
The story is very fast paced so it might take the reader a second to piece things together, but once you get the hang of it you will love it!
Its clear that Isabella has put in so much of her heart and soul into the story and when you read it you will know too. Fair warning - you might end up not putting the book down (so finish all your work before you step into this one)

Complex mental health issues are never an easy topic to write about. But Isabella has very obviously done her research to bring the character of Harper to life. Beyond that there are many deep issues that happen or are discussed throughout the story and they all come together for readers. Take to heart the triggers. This is an intense read that takes us to a lot of dark places.

Thankfully, there are moments of light such as Harper’s true support system. Sometimes in our hardest times, having even one person to believe in us can make so much difference.

If you can appreciate complex and dark issues, struggles with mental health, and you want to be on the edge of your seat the entire time, then check out A System of Deception!

Spice level is 5/5 due to non-con. Please check author's TW list.

❣️ARC review:

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the concept of the MFC having DID! It made the story interesting! So much going on in Harper's life! I felt bad for her, being confused and stuff. I had so many different emotions through it! But in the end it was a really good book!

De Bruno’s crisp writing immediately hooked me, reminiscent of the movies “Sybil” and “The Seven Faces of Eve.” The seamless use of multiple POVs added depth, making the story truly engaging.

The main character, Harper Lane, struggles with her mother’s abandonment and assault experiences, though she can’t remember them. At sixteen, she’s forced into therapy for an undiagnosed mental illness. Her first psychologist, Doctor Jett Shaw, dismisses her as seeking attention.

After seven years, Doctor Shaw retires, and Harper meets his son, Dr. Brody Shaw, a respected psychologist who validates her symptoms. Harper develops feelings for Brody, who reciprocates but hides her diagnosis for his own purposes. Brody becomes infatuated with Raven, one of Harper’s alter personalities, who manipulates him for her own game, leaving Harper unaware and confused by memory gaps and time loss.

Brody’s plans are disrupted when Harper meets private investigator Alo Billengana. As Alo and Harper grow closer, he becomes suspicious of Brody and investigates, uncovering secrets about Harper’s childhood and illness. With the help of Harper’s friend, Nella, and the emergence of another alter-personality, Amethyst, Alo races against time to save Harper from Brody.

De Bruno’s narrative, rich with multiple POVs, enhances the story, allowing readers to understand each character’s motivations and growth. The exploration of mental illness is central, portrayed with sensitivity and insight, challenging preconceptions and fostering empathy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author, Isabella De Bruno, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Title- A system of deception
Rating-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My first experience with Isabella's writing did not disappoint. The book's focus on mental illness was thoroughly explored and presented in a unique and captivating way. The use of multiple perspectives was executed seamlessly, making it easy for me to follow and deeply invest in the story.

sabella's narrative is a compelling journey, rich with diverse viewpoints that breathe life into every character. Her portrayal of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is both sensitive and insightful, challenging stereotypes and fostering genuine empathy. 📚💫

Isabella's writing captivates from the start, skillfully weaving together the complexities of DID in a way that feels authentic and immersive. The use of multiple perspectives adds depth, drawing readers into a thought-provoking exploration. 🌟

Harper Lane stands at the heart of the story—a protagonist navigating life with DID, shaped by the lingering effects of her mother’s abandonment and buried traumas. From diagnosis as a teenager to years of therapy under the skeptical eye of Doctor Jett Shaw, Harper’s journey is a poignant reflection of resilience and self-discovery. 🌸

Enter Dr. Brody Shaw, Doctor Shaw’s son, whose presence brings both comfort and complication to Harper’s therapeutic journey. Their evolving relationship becomes a focal point as Harper navigates her diagnosis and grapples with the complexities of her alter personalities, like Raven and Amethyst. 🌿💬

Isabella's storytelling captivates with its rich characters and a plot that delves deep into the realities of living with DID. Beyond a portrayal of mental health, it’s a powerful narrative of strength, understanding, and the indomitable human spirit. 🌈

Thanks to Isabella De Bruno and BookSirens, I received this ARC for free and I am leaving my review voluntarily.

TLDR: 3.5⭐️ rounded up. A System of Deception by Isabella De Bruno is a rollercoaster ride with many layers that will leave you feeling hopeful, hopeless, empathetic, uncomfortable, and downright disgusted at some of the characters actions. Multiple perspectives that are easy to follow and add depth to the complexities of DID and the way it impacts the patients and their loved ones. De Bruno dealt with difficult topics in a sensitive and informed manner. With that being said, at times the style of writing seemed to run on a bit and there were some side plots that I felt the book could’ve gone without. While the core story was engaging and well-written, the various locations, subplots, and jumps in time (the book takes place over several years), were at times confusing and/or seemed unnecessary to the main plot.

I admire how the author started the book off by discussing mental health. It set the tone for the book and made it clear that mental illness would be accurately portrayed, which isn’t always the case, especially with Dissociative Identity Disorder. I felt like I learned a lot about DID and although I will never truly know what it feels like to have DID, a System of Deception provided excellent insight and made it easier to understand not only the disorder, but what a person with DID and the people around them experience. I rounded my rating up mostly due to the accurate portrayal.

A System of Deception introduces us to Harper, a young woman who experiences lapses in time, bad headaches, and states of dissociative fugue. We learn that she has faced abuse, abandonment, and grief in her childhood and has spent the last 7 years in “mandatory” therapy with Dr. Jett Shaw, a creepy, insufferable man who is majorly lacking in empathy. He dismisses Harper and believes she is making up the abuse and her symptoms for attention, leaving Harper to feel demoralized and emotionally invalidated. Unfortunately, Harper’s experience with Dr. Shaw is all too real when it comes to seeking not only mental health treatment, but any sort of medical treatment at all. It was easy to feel frustration and anger right along with Harper.

Thankfully, Dr. Shaw retires and as Harper is in his office for her last appointment, she meets his son, the attractive, intelligent, and kind Dr. Brody Shaw. They begin discussing her experience with therapy and her childhood, including the imaginary world she escaped to when being abused, along with the weird occurrences that she’s been experiencing throughout her adult life. Their meeting ends with the younger Dr. Shaw recruiting Harper as a participant in his research, leaving Harper (and the reader) with hope that he will finally figure out what is wrong with her.

Switching to Brody’s perspective of their meeting, some seeds of doubt were planted when we learn that Brody deceived Harper as his research was already completed. Even more of a red flag than the deception, is the fact that he admits to feeling no remorse for deceiving her. Any bit of hope I had dwindled, as it rapidly became more and more clear that Brody is a horrible person, contrary to the kind and empathetic doctor we originally met.

After meeting Raven, one of Harper’s alters, the disgust for Brody grows and the tone of the book is quite dark from here on out so definitely be mindful of the triggers the author lists at the beginning of the book. The explanation of how detailed the triggers are is 100% accurate and I appreciate how she broke it down like this.

Brody is absolutely unhinged, Harper and her alters face more traumatic events, and the book continues to be a whirlwind of emotions. I personally could feel the discomfort and disgust throughout the book as if it was happening to myself or someone I know, and I applaud De Bruno for writing in a way that makes you feel all the things!

*very slight spoilers ahead*

Introducing Alo does bring back that sense of hope and adds a little happiness with the lighthearted romance. The growth that occurs with Bethany, and the improvement in her relationship with Harper was also a nice touch, because again, it added back some hope that things would be okay in the end. However, at times it did seem a little daytime drama-y with some of the occurrences, such as parts of Alo and Harper’s relationship, or when Harper’s father walks her down the aisle and her siblings are in her wedding minutes after meeting for the first time. In addition, some of the sub plots seemed kind of pointless to the main plot and added onto the story feeling a bit soap-y and having too much going on.

Overall, System of Deception combines serious mental health issues, suspense, romance, and anxiety-inducing situations into a well-written domestic thriller with a complete ending tying everything together. The diverse characters are developed nicely and it is easy to see why they are the way they are and what their motives are. It handled difficult topics in a sensitive and informed manner, and I look forward to checking out any future books by De Bruno.

If you are looking for your next thriller, this should be it! Isabella de Bruno’s newest novel quickly pulled me in at the beginning and had me guessing until the end. There were so many sub plots and twists that I just couldn’t put it down! This book is full of dramatic turns in relationships, spicy scenes, romance with lots of will they won’t they, dangerous and reckless behavior, love triangles, and found family. Although this is multiple POV, the FMC had dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities) which creates so many layers to the story. This one would definitely bring anyone out of a reading slump!

What a layered and well-plotted read! Elements of mystery, psychological thriller and romance fuel a story about a young woman with a troubled past who now struggles with mental illness.

The multi POV and short chapters make it easy to stay engaged with all the characters and follow along even with the complex mental health themes. Harper was a such an interesting character and I really enjoyed her interactions with and relationship with Alo.

I was very impressed with the handling of such mature themes that Harper's past and present set up, and hope to see more from this author!

A System of Deception is the perfect title for this deceptive psychological thriller which focuses on Harper Lane, a young woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Isabella De Bruno did a fantastic job with the plot, the characters, and the unique system of alters living within Harper. Throughout the story, I struggled to find a character I trusted, which made this book more compelling. When I thought I could trust one character, they turned out to be untrustworthy and only interested in manipulating Harper. I truly think this book is a great read.

This was a wild ride.

There’s a lot of POVs in this one and it took a bit for me to get used to them all, but once I did it read much easier. All coming together nicely.

I loved the DID aspect and the level of research done by Isabella on it. I feel it was represented very well through the character’s POVs.

There are lots of dark & heavy topics in this so please make sure to read the trigger warnings before diving in.

Overall it was a great read and done well.

This is a challenging read which delves into the misunderstood Dual Identity Disorder (DID). Isabella de Bruno has real courage in writing this, shining a light on something very personal to her.

There are times where it is a bit jarring but it does give an insight into the dangers of this not being diagnosed. It's never easy to read about mental health issues, especially when they are this raw.

Please do check trigger warnings before reading this.

My second ARC read this year. I found the subject very interesting, I find most authors steer clear of anything to do with mental illnesses and this author approaches it several different ways.
Without giving away any spoilers, I rated three stars based off the characters not the tropes or themes.
I simply didn’t like any of the characters they all seemed like made for tv actors/immature with language. With the right cast this could actually be a great TV show with the action and drama in each chapter.

I received a free ARC of this book and I am leaving an honest and voluntary review. Harper is mysteriously losing time due to her traumatic childhood and undiagnosed mental illness, can a new research programme and an enigmatic doctor help? This was a dark and gripping tale, dealing sensitively with serious topics. Certain elements of pacing felt a tad off, but overall a good read

I learned a lot about DID reading this book. It was a little long in some spots for me. I felt for some of the characters and also despised a few too. The story is good, kept me engaged and wanting to know what happenens.

I felt the author ran on too much (the style of writing)

However the plot was interesting enough I overlooked it,but it's the reason for the lower rating.

Mental health is serious and the way the author wrote about it was very good and seemingly well researched.

A System of Deception by Isabella De Bruno
Rating: 4/5
Release Date: 26 June 2024

Harper Lane's turbulent upbringing, marked by abandonment and assault, leaves her grappling with undiagnosed mental illness. At sixteen, she reluctantly enters therapy under Dr. Jett Shaw, whose dismissive treatment of her dissociative fugue and abuse allegations exacerbates her emotional turmoil.

Seven challenging years later, Dr. Shaw retires, leading Harper to encounter his son, Dr. Brody Shaw, a respected psychologist who recognises and validates Harper's symptoms. As they collaborate, Harper develops feelings for Brody, who reciprocates, but conceals the full extent of her diagnosis for his own gain.

Their dynamic shifts when Harper meets charming private investigator Alo Billengana. As their relationship deepens, Alo becomes suspicious of Harper's ties to Brody and her erratic behaviour. Investigating Brody's past, Alo unravels secrets from Harper's childhood and her mental health struggles. He realises the danger Harper faces under Brody's manipulative influence and resolves to protect her.

Alo's discovery triggers a race against time to rescue Harper from Brody's control, unraveling a complex web of deception and danger that threatens to shatter Harper's life.

Isabella's narrative is a masterful tapestry of multiple perspectives that enriches the story's complexity and ensures a deeply engaging experience from start to finish. Through these diverse viewpoints, the novel achieves a remarkable depth, allowing readers to perceive the intricacies of each character's motivations, struggles, and growth.

The exploration of mental illness in the narrative is not just a backdrop but a central theme woven intricately into the fabric of the story. Harper Lane's journey, haunted by the shadows of abandonment and trauma, unfolds with poignant authenticity. From her turbulent adolescence marked by misunderstood symptoms to her adult years grappling with elusive diagnoses, the portrayal is both enlightening and empathetic. Isabella skilfully navigates the nuances of mental health, portraying Harper's challenges with sensitivity and insight.

What sets the novel apart is its ability to captivate and provoke thought long after the final page. Each perspective adds layers of understanding to Harper's experiences, highlighting the impact of mental illness on relationships, identity, and self-discovery. The narrative invites readers to contemplate the complexities of psychological health, challenging preconceptions and fostering empathy.

Overall, Isabella's storytelling prowess shines through in her ability to craft a narrative that not only entertains but also enlightens. The exploration of mental illness is handled with nuance and depth, making the novel a compelling and thought-provoking journey that resonates deeply with readers.

This book had me hooked from the first chapter. Immediately we're given an air of mystery as you listen to our main character Harper Lane go over her years of dealing with an awful therapist. Soon after we're all given a sense of hope as Brody Shaw wants to help her figure out what's wrong with her and why she's 'losing time'.

That's when this book shifts from a possible simple romance into something that I can only describe as a really, really good episode of criminal minds or a movie with a similar feel to that. The twists and turns are never ending and keep you wanting more so you can figure out how everything is going to play out. At times you're left feeling exasperated and a bit hopeless; like things are never going to get better for Harper and antagonists will never get what's coming to them. In the end, it all comes together beautifully in a good, satisfying ending.

As soon as I finished reading and I finally had to set this book down, I wished that I could immediately forget everything I'd just read so I could start over from the beginning. I truly cannot recommend this book enough. It's addicting on a new level. But please do pay mind to the trigger warnings! Take them seriously! This book is dark and uncomfortable. That being said, I think the author handled it all amazingly. Not once was I left feeling that any of it was romanticized or taken lightly.

Bro, this ain't my usual jam, but Isabella's story had me hooked from the jump. The way she dives into Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is legit, bro—real talk, it challenges stereotypes and hits you right in the feels. 📚💪

Isabella's writing is fire, man. She grabs you right away with a style that gets deep into the complexity of DID. The way she uses multiple perspectives? Genius, bro—it's like you're living every moment with the characters. 🌟

Say what up to Harper Lane, the main squeeze in this story. She's dealing with DID, her mom's ghosting, and some heavy trauma buried in her dome. From her diagnosis at sixteen to getting grilled by Dr. Jett Shaw, Harper's journey is all about finding herself and staying strong. 🌸

Then you got Dr. Brody Shaw, Shaw's son. He steps in and things get real interesting for Harper. Their vibe gets complicated as they figure out her diagnosis and the other personas like Raven and Amethyst. It's a wild ride, bro. 🌿💬

Isabella's storytelling skills are on point, man. Her characters are solid, and she brings realness to the struggles of living with DID. This ain't just a book about mental health—it's about owning your strength and understanding what makes you real. 🌈

First. I do not give 5 stars to just any book. Being a psychology student and the daughter of someone with DID, as soon as I saw this book on TikTok, I knew I had to read it.

As the author mentions, the media has created an unrealistic image of people with DID and I am thrilled there are authors like De Bruno who are exposing the truth behind the illness.

With that said, my review.

Being the loved one of someone with DID is a bumpy and sometimes scary ride and De Bruno depicted Harper's journey with clinical accuracy and sensitivity.

Character development is on point, especially the introduction of Harper's alters. I read through all the reviews for this book. Many despised Raven for her actions, but only a true understanding of a dissociated system would allow someone to feel empathy toward Raven.

$exual manipulation by alters is typical and sadly, it's also common for authority figures and partners of those with DID.

The plot is chef's kiss and the ending left me wondering. This is a book that will stay with you long after you read the final page. If you can handle a highly triggering book with dark subjects and very flawed characters, this is a read for you.

De Bruno will be an author I will read again.

As a psychologist specializing in Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), I often encounter misrepresentations in media, but Isabella’s depiction in this narrative is refreshingly accurate. She navigates the complexities of DID with authenticity and insight, challenging stereotypes and fostering genuine understanding.

Isabella’s portrayal is marked by its depth and authenticity. Through nuanced storytelling and multiple perspectives, she captures the intricacies of DID in a way that resonates with clinical accuracy—a departure from sensationalized portrayals.

Harper, the central character, exemplifies the challenges individuals with DID face. Isabella portrays Harper’s journey with sensitivity, exploring themes of identity and trauma without resorting to clichés or simplifications.

Isabella’s narrative not only captivates with its compelling characters but also educates readers on the realities of living with DID. Her careful attention to detail and understanding of the disorder make this work a standout in psychological fiction, offering a rare and valuable perspective.

Absolutely un-put-down-able!

The writing style might not be to everyone's taste, but I found it pleasant. It also put me in each characters place which very few books can do.

The plot is complicated, but there is no filler content. To me, everything had its place and all came together beautifully.

The author's handling of some very dark and serious subject was phenomenal and I appreciate the breakdown of the trigger warnings at the beginning. This book was written with complete professionalism and tact.

The character development for this book was amazing. As I mentioned, I felt as though I was in the novel for each character.

The amount of research that must have gone into this book is mind-blowing.

Is this going to be a book everyone will like? No, but if you like a psychological thriller that reads as if it should be a mini series or a movie and you can handle some very heavy content, you will LOVE this book.

I look forward to seeing more from this author.

This psychological thriller is dark, intense, and thought-provoking, weaving layers of mystery, emotional turmoil, and unsettling truths into a story that kept me glued to the pages.

Harper Lane’s journey is gripping. She has lived through abandonment, betrayal, and trauma, all while struggling with dissociative identity disorder. Watching her navigate the complexities of her mind, relationships, and the people who claim to want to help her was both heartbreaking and fascinating. The portrayal of DID felt deeply researched and respectful, shedding light on the reality of the condition rather than relying on stereotypes.

The characters in this book aren’t easy to trust. Brody, is particularly unsettling.
And then there’s Alo.

The pacing is steady yet unpredictable, taking me through shocking turns and highs and lows. This isn’t just a thriller, it’s a deep dive into power, manipulation, and survival.

This book was actually insane. Plot twist after plot twist! Just when I thought I know what was happening, something new and crazier would derail the story!🫢

You really need to sit down and give it your attention to follow the story, especially in the beginning. 🤔

I have always been fascinated with DID and the way the mind uses it to handle trauma. I have been watching DID youtubers for years, so the concept of this book intrigued me. I had no idea the wild ride I was about to go on!👯‍♀️

This is not a dark romance book! It is very much a psychological thriller. It will have you guessing the entire time and wondering what version of the truth you are getting and even if there are several versions of the truth.🔪

I would recommend to anyone who like complicated plots and a story that will keep you sucked in from the beginning.👀

A System of Deception by Isabella De Bruno is about a young girl Harper, struggling with un diagnosed mental health issues. After many years of unsuccessful, mandatory therapy, she finally meets a psychologist who listens to her and wants to help, or so it seems. Harpers relationship with the doctor quickly becomes inappropriate and bizarre.

This reads like an overly descriptive yet extremely flat informational pamphlet. I felt no connection to any of the characters and the plot felt silly, strange and criminally underdeveloped. None of this writing felt believable. Unfortunately this book did not work for me.

I read up to nine chapters before seeing that this book is personally not for me. I stopped feeling connection to the characters after a few chapters, maybe because I don't understand what it's like to have Harper's disorder as she changes from one person to another. Raven, as one of the personalities (?) Was admirable for her self confidence but apart from that I really hated her, not only she took advantage of Harper and her body but she's also someone I would stay away from.

Also, having sex with her mother's husband was just messed up.
