Novelisation of the late 1970s television series by Michael Hardwick. This is volume 1 of the trials and tribulations of the Bourne family from Larkfield Manor in Herefordshire in the 1930s.

A fairly flat re-telling of the episodes from the first series, but manages to capture the essence of the dilemmas faced by a small, middle class county squire with three grown up daughters at home. The Cedar Tree was a delightful series, with some lovely characters and some interesting storylines, but as with many such novelisations, the episodic nature of the programme is apparent in the book. Although the back stories are convincing, the overarching narrative is lost. Still, it was great to revisit the charming people and places of Alfred Shaughnessy's imagination.
