Bob Hartman’s Clever Cub Is Wonderfully Made is a joyful celebration of how God creates each of us with unique gifts—perfect for children ages 3 to 6.
In this adorable tale, Clever Cub feels frustrated because he can’t do the fun things his friends can—he can’t burrow like Rabbit, bounce like Squirrel, or even make stink bombs like Skunk! But Mama and Papa Bear tenderly remind him, using the beautiful words of Psalm 139, that God made him just right. Just like David, the shepherd boy with his own special gifts (1 Samuel 16:1–13), Clever Cub is wonderfully made with a purpose in God’s story.
What I especially love about Clever Cub Is Wonderfully Made is how it not only shares an important biblical truth but also opens up conversations. Each book in the series includes thoughtful questions at the end, making it easy for parents and ministry leaders to help kids understand their unique part in God’s grand plan.
Hartman’s storytelling truly shines here, bringing Psalm 139 to life in a way that resonates with little ones' hearts. Through Clever Cub’s disappointment, children learn that God’s love and design for us are powerful and perfect. I greatly appreciate how the story emphasizes that knowing and believing God and His Word is so much more important and reliable than any feelings we have—an essential truth for kids (and adults!) to grasp early in life.

I love reading picture books with our four young grandchildren, and it’s extra special when the books include our Christian faith.
Clever Cub Is Wonderfully Made is written by Bob Hartman and illustrated by Steve Brown. Clever Cub has many books for children ages 3 to 6; these are the first I’ve read.
This is colorfully illustrated, and I appreciate that some of the human characters have culturally appropriate darker skin. Every page includes Clever Cub’s animal friends that provide a cute ‘seek and find’ element.
In these stories, Clever Cub learns a life lesson from his parents who use Bible stories to teach it. Clever Cub Is Wonderfully Made references Psalm 139 and the story of David (I Samuel 16) to teach that each of us is wonderful, even when our skills or appearance is different from others.
This includes humor too - Clever Cub wishes he could make “stinky stink bombs” like a skunk. Our grandchildren will love this! I’m looking forward to reading this to them soon.
