Rate this book
Now, here’s an oxymoron for you. I’m at the Angels of Mercy Charity fundraiser, and I’m face to face with Tony. I can only think of four other people on this planet who hate me more.

I killed her father . . .

Despite fifteen years of separation, the undeniable tensions still linger.

I have wanted to say something for fifteen years but haven’t had a chance.

Well, here is my chance.

I’ve dropped a million dollars on this auction just to secure a mandated, obligatory time with her.

As per the rules of the game, she has to go on this date with me . . . she is bought and paid for.

Imagine my shock when she turns up with three perfect imitations of Vlad the Impaler, Leona Helmsley, and Miranda Priestly—her brother Dick, and two sisters; Jenny and Lola.

It’s a date I never saw coming, an encounter fraught with the weight of the past and a clash that will definitely shape our unpredictable future.

Fifteen years of pain and suffering hover over our table.

I certainly bit more than I can chew. I bought a date but got a collision of destinies, where redemption and retribution dance on a precarious edge.

Liam Dexter (MMC) returns to town 15 years after a horrific accident that claimed the life of Antonia “Tony” Ricardo’s (FMC) father. Liam (also known as the Devil) was the driver and spent time in prison because of the accident. Liam attends a charity fundraiser that features the auctioning off of “dates” and he bids one million dollars for a 24-hour mandated, obligatory date with Tony. Liam wants to use the date as an opportunity to talk to Tony. She doesn’t want to go, so Tony enlists her brother and two siblings to go on the date with her. This challenging date comes at a troubled time in Tony’s life. She feels tired in body, spirit, and soul because she is in town because her mother is dying. Tony does the unexpected and brings her siblings with her to the date. Liam and the Ricardo siblings were friends when they were children since Tony’s mother worked for Liam’s grandmother and the family lived with the grandmother. I found it funny that the siblings worked together on their “Operation Sibling Front” mission and wore their “date sabotage” attire and went to the date as a united front.

Even though the book deals with serious topics like car accidents, cancer, and death, there are still plenty of light-hearted moments. I especially laughed when reading about the different ideas that Tony had for revenge, such as hoping Liam would die from being eaten by an alligator or having a piano fall on his head. Liam worried about his family finding out he went to dinner with all of the Ricardos, and he worried his family would punish him with death by fire ants or guillotine. The scheme to catch a criminal red-handed was priceless. There were endless funny quips that kept me laughing.

Of course, nothing is as it seems, and there is lots of backstory with twists and emotions. This is a story of second chances and the power of love. Overall, an excellent story with great plot lines and characters. Another great book by Clarke. Read it. You will love it.

This is my first book by Amani B. Clarke and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book has so many twists and turns - from page to page, chapter to chapter, you will not be able to put it down! The story is intriguing from the start and I could not put it down.

A thoroughly enjoyable read from one chapter to the next - at times you are metaphorical “on the edge of your chair” wondering what will happen next. You will fall in love with Liam and Tony (short for Antonia), hoping that everything with work out for them and if they have a future together. Overall, I would highly recommend this book and you will not be disappointed 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

3.5* - Rounded up to 4...

This was an interesting read. The story was intense, with a range of potential triggers, so I suggest that potential readers check a trigger warning list.

This story pulled me through a range of emotions. There was a lot happening with a lot of players, and at times it felt difficult to follow/remember everything that was happening. It was also difficult at times to follow/understand the characters thought processes and the reasons for all their actions.

That said, I did feel a need to complete the book, and it all came together quite well in the end.

Liam ( the Devil) Dexter returns to town fifteen years after an horrific accident that culminated in killing Antonia/ Tony Ricardo’s father and that he served time in prison for. He wants to make amends with Tony . The Ricardo siblings and he were all childhood friends their mother working for and them all living with his grandmother. He engineers a bid at a charity auction to claim a date with Tony. What he got was a mob of angry Ricardos…. Can the Devil turn things around? No spoilers suffice to say an awesome , complex and interesting romance storytelling. Good writing.

Tony's family worked for Liam's, and he was accused of killing her father and went away. Now he is back and has placed a bid at a charity auction winning her for a date. This story has some serious twists and turns that had me all caught up in the drama as the story unfolds and the truth is finally revealed about what happened when her father was killed and who actually did it. Will she and Liam whose relationship is blossoming get their chance for happiness.
