The Grammaring Guide to English Grammar is a resource book on the grammar of Standard British English. It is intended for intermediate to advanced students of English as a second or foreign language who have already studied the basic grammar of English. It covers the most important areas of English grammar and concentrates on structures which may cause difficulty at an intermediate level or above.
The book starts with a pretest that helps you identify the areas you need to work on. The pretest is followed by eleven chapters, broken down to a number of subchapters that each deal with a specific grammar point. The related explanations are accompanied by real-life sample sentences, timeline diagrams, tables, and quotes. If a similar point or the same point is discussed in a different part of the book, you will find cross-references to that point. Where appropriate, chapters begin with guiding questions and end with revision questions. Most of the chapters are followed by exercises, including multiple choice, sentence transformation, error correction, gap filling and matching exercises, as well as communicative tasks that can be done in language lessons. At the end of the book, there is an appendix which contains a list of the most common irregular verb forms and the most important spelling rules; a list of the quotes that appear in the book; and a glossary that defines grammatical terms frequently used in the explanations.
The chapters in this book are not arranged in order of difficulty. This way, the book can be used for quick reference on specific points of interest, as well as for systematic study, either as a self-study grammar book or as additional material in an ESL/EFL course. No matter which way you use the book, it is recommended that you follow the cross-references, which will lead you to further information on a given item. The exercises, which come with suggested answers, are best done using pen and paper. These exercises will not only help you to practise grammar but also to tie grammatical forms to real-world meaning.

Hello, dear reader. Although it`s not typical to write personal information in a review, I consider it helpful for the readers of this book. So, I met with Peter Simon on his site called Grammaring.com where there are dozens of scrupulous articles on grammar, and the author makes emphasis on teaching "the grammar of Standard British English". I am an English tutor and I`ve got special needs concerning grammar, i.e. I need grammar explained really clearly to be able to share this knowledge with my students. Now, as to the book. It looks rather simple, but it`s a misleading impression because: 1) the grammar in the book is seriously worked up, 2) tables, charts. I can not say they were eloquent or sophisticated - rather than that they just showed what I needed to see. The time where the action began, what was happening during the action, and whether the action was still going on at the moment another action or set of time began. In addition, there are many example sentences, so you will not be left puzzled with a table, but rather you`ll have sentences close to the matter. One last important thing - the material is stuffed with a variety of topics on one theme. For example, if you need Past Perfect, you will get not only a simple explanation on it, but there will be "Past perfect for actions for actions completed before a point in the past", "Past perfect with FOR", "Past perfect with superlative forms of adjectives", "The difference between the past simple and the past perfect", and so on. I recommend this book especially to those who prefer graphical representations on grammar, with examples. Thank you for writing this book, Peter Simon.
Hello Reader, First of all I would like to start my review with a wholehearted compliment to the author on this book. This book is just simply perfect. The whole book is well-organised and easy to handle. There are many chapters, which are broken into sub-chapters. Each chapter explains different parts of the grammar but it always recommends related topics to other areas so you can easily find some quick references on a specific point of interest. Some of the chapters start with guiding questions which help you realize how much you already know about the topic. At the end of the chapters you have some revision questions, which obviously aid you to revise the material. It is a resource book, so you won’t find any drilling grammar exercises...but you don’t really need it. This is the book that you can rely on...you can always turn to it for guidance or reassurance. The diagrams, the examples and the quotes are there to help you, but if it’s not enough there you have Peter’s clear and student-friendly explanations. I can warmly recommend this book if you are a student above intermediate level or if you are a teacher of an upper-intermediate or advanced group. I will definitely use it on a daily basis.
This is a very well-structured, clear and user-friendly book which I would recommend to both learners and teachers. I teach adult groups who will need to use English in their future profession but there are really substantial differences within the group concerning former knowledge of English. Their primary aim is to be able to interact with their customers, clients, etc., so the focus is on communication skills. They are not interested in difficult grammar tests or dull exercices of gramnmar structures. At the beginning of each course there is a quick grammar revision to "synchronize" the group and it is very important for them to get a clear view of the structure of the language. Often re-starters have a lot of fragments in their heads but don't know how they come together. This book is precisely what I was looking for to find the easiest, most understandable ways to explain structure and grammar. It gets to the point immediately but with the quotes, for example, it also offers a great reminder that grammar is something to be used not just learned. This book helped me with beginner and more advanced groups, as well, since it covers the more difficult and hidden areas of grammar in the same simple, down-to-earth manner as the easier ones. Great job and thanks!
A very valuable resource book for any EFL teacher or anyone interested in the intricacies of English grammar.
The grammatical points are clearly explained, accompanied by example sentences, illustrated with diagrams, and further enlivened by quotes. The structure also deserves praise because the book is broken down into many sections devoted to specific points of grammar, which is very useful if one needs to use the book as a quick reference.
I highly recommended this book both to teachers, as a resource, and to students who wish to do some studying on their own.
