James Scouller is an executive coach, thought leader and author. His fascination with leadership has dominated his working life over the last 45 years. It’s been the golden thread connecting his four books. What sets his work apart? His focus on the previously ignored psychological challenges facing leaders and their teams.
His first book was The Three Levels of Leadership, a self-help manual for leaders. It offered readers groundbreaking models and tools for growing their presence, knowhow and skill. Launched into a crowded leadership book space with little promotional backing, it received five-star reviews around the world largely through word-of-mouth.
His new trilogy, How To Build Winning Teams Again And Again, came out in January 2024. James sees this as a companion series to “Three Levels”. It took him 15 years to research, test and write. Book one in the trilogy won the 2025 Independent Press Award(Business: General).
After living and working in different countries he led three international companies as CEO for 11 years before founding his executive coaching practice, The Scouller Partnership, in 2004. Today, when he’s not writing, he coaches leaders and their teams. He has two postgraduate coaching qualifications and trained in applied psychology for four years at the UK Institute of Psychosynthesis. He also holds a 4th Dan black belt in Aikido, a Japanese martial art.
James Scouller has written a trilogy and this is book one. In this book he walks the reader through the psychological make up of various types of teams. If you already have a team this information would be helpful in evaluating your team and how to use the strategies discussed further in the trilogy to accomplish a winning team. If you are in the process of building a team the information in this book would be a great tool to have when deciding on team members. If you are leaving team, this information would be an important reflective tool. This book does a wonderful job providing a framework for strategies that when put to use would create an unstoppable dynamic team capable of a lot of success.
Step One - What you need to know about the psychological challenges of creating teams.
How To Build Winning Teams Again and Again: Book 1 is a thought-provoking and insightful guide that delves into the psychological intricacies of team building.
This first book serves as a foundational piece, being an essential starting point for leaders and managers seeking to navigate the complex terrain of team building. This complexity comes from many aspects:
• A team may not be a team! • Team or teamwork? • Team building takes time (that you may not have).
The use of the Team Progression Curve helps to address these, and many other points, by providing a realistic representation of the three forms of small work groups (Task Groups, Performance, and Teams), each of which require different ways of managing and leading.
In this first book of the Trilogy, James Scouller, with a wealth of experience, presents a compelling case for the importance of mastering the art of creating, leading, and regenerating teams, and sets the scene for the pathway to success in team building provided in Books 2 and 3.
