Four and a half stars.
This is not a big book in pages, only around 150 pages but there is a lot to ponder, absorb and practical tips to put into practice. If I was to quote every passage I found encouraging or helpful I would have a super long review so I have chosen only a few.
On Page 55 this struck me as so true about the words of the accuser and the way he whispers lies to try and make Christians doubt God and His Word. I liked the idea that if God wanted to kill our joy He would never have made flowers. Neither would He have created the beautiful bay near where we live. The point is made to search the scriptures for ways to combat Satan’s lies. We are reminded in 2 Timothy 1:7 ‘ that the Spirit of God does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self discipline.’ We need to harness those things in our lives. Believers are reminded of all we have as we believe in Him in Romans 15:13 . And that hope produces joy and peace as we trust in Him. We need to trust the wisdom and love of the Giver, not easy when things are tough but what we need to do. The generosity of God is shown in all given up for us by sending His Son as a sacrifice .
The thought echoes that if we practise thanksgiving, joy will flower. Interesting that joy does not take as long to grow into a habit as some other fruit of the spirit, like patience!
The author then gives practical advice how to make a habit of joy. It is about giving thanks in (not for) all circumstances. She starts by suggesting we think of three things we are thankful for every night and record them, p85, by the second week build to 7 and at end of month 10. I started that day putting this advice into practice.
Also we need to praise God even when we don’t feel like it. The challenge is how much is God’s word getting into you? Important not just to read but put into practice.
Not sure I was completely convinced about the first person narrative of Mary of Bethany’s story but then a reader doesn’t have to accept every single word in a book to find a book really helpful and worth reading.
This book is filled with little gems and it is definitely one to take time over, to read carefully and learn from. A useful tool in our Christian life. A little source of joy indeed. Thanks to Anne Hamilton, the publisher, who gifted me a copy of this book. What a blessing!
Could be you may find, as I did, that it is just the book needed to read at the time to start you on a joy trail.
