We live at a time when the foundations of belief and faith are shaken; when attachment to a materialistic way of life is almost universally prized and pursued; and when the anthems of compassion, care, and love are silenced by cries of self-interest, self-protection, and fear and hatred of 'others'. It is increasingly evident to those who are not seduced by the prevailing materialistic way of life, that materialism, like a cancerous malady, will eventually destroy the very civilization it has labored to create. Equally ominous is the rise of religious fundamentalism and militarism that has skewed the foundations of religion, misrepresented its fundamental objectives, and misapplied its considerable powers over the masses of humanity. It is evident that neither materialistic science nor unstudied religiosity will be able to correct the ills of an afflicted humanity. This book invites you to investigate issues of faith and reason, and material and spiritual from the unique perspectives of the unity-based teachings of the newest world religion-the Bahá'í Faith-and consider its profound implications for your personal, family, and community life.
How does this world enter the stage of maturity? Its road needs be paved with a few requisites which should all be considered in order to reach the ultimate destiny of man: Equality, Justice, Peace, and Love, to name a few and are the principles around which our lives should revolve. These are some of the the primary virtues that must be centred in our hearts, while tethered to a Celestial Source, from which our souls are able to ascend a spiritual reality rather than descending into the confines of a material life.
Unity of Faith and Reason in Action: A Journey of Discovery By H.B. Danesh, expounds on the destiny of man to reach greater heights through the Bahai Perspective. All this is generated through the teachings and principles of Baha'u'llah's vision, the Manifestation of God for this day and age. Danesh explicitly commits that one must have the tripartite qualities in order to be an agent of Unity and a promotor of the Oneness of Humanity: To know, to love, and to will. These three are the positive forces that direct and engages one to live a life of knowledge, truth, and discovery, both within and without ones own self, to manifest love to all who cross your path and to will oneself to actualize and make things a tangible reality, both materially and spiritually. Ultimately, these stem from the individual, however, if they be attached to a Unity-Based perspective, in which Danesh stresses emphatically throughout the book, the individual will be endowed a world-embracing vision insofar that every thought and action is for the upliftment and rehabilitation for the world and its denizens.
Though the world will inevitably reach its goal, still, the hammer of war has prevailed, power has been in the hands of the corrupt for so long, the foundation of truthfulness has been eroded, religious fanaticism is extreme, irreligiousness is fully apparent, politics has been a failing arena, aggrandizement of wealth, destitution and injustice is imposing in its efforts.
How are we to erase these disintegrating forces that grossly affect all who live in and around them?
The answer is clear, the Message is delivered, the diagnoses has been declared, and the remedy is already prescribed. It only needs open hearts, herculean effort and unrestrained love by a great, indomitable spiritual collective body of humanity.
H.B. Danesh has done an exemplary job in summarizing and describing the issues at hand, and the remedies for each affliction henceforth. And not to mention, it does periodically dwell on H.B. Danesh's own life and upbringing, which is very heartfelt and humbling. With that said, this is a book of learning, of acquiring its jewels, and applying them in our lives, which, of course, could not possibly have been rendered so beautifully, if not for the Ocean of the Revelation of Baha'u'llah.
