PowerPivot for Advanced Reporting and Dashboards is a solid introduction to PowerPivot. If covers the basics, e.g. downloading and installing PowerPivot and the benefits of PowerPivot over plain old Excel, to more complex topics such as data modelling concepts and data analysis expressions. Chapter 4 contains a well-explained run through of the process of creating reports, pivot tables and pivot charts, and introduces “slicers” (PowerPivot filters that provide interactive reporting features). There’s also some good detail on creating dashboards, i.e. a single view of multiple reports and how to deploy reports to SharePoint. Overall, this is a good book. I think it is more useful to experienced Excel users looking for something more powerful – experienced users of other BI tools may find that they know much of the background material in this book already.
The title may be slightly misleading. PowerPivot for Advanced Reporting and Dashboard is actually and introduction to PowerPivot. At first glance it looks like an advanced book.
The book is fine but a good chunk of it is dedicated to simply getting PowerPivot installed and then another chunk applies to connecting it to SharePoint. It's a good starting point, but it's very definitely just a start.
PowerPivot for Advanced Reporting and Dashboards teaches readers the fundamentals of PowerPivot as well as how to use the different data types available. The book is a good starting point and teaches the essentials well. However I wouldn't really say its advanced.
