Ahmed Kemil is a Tuareg nomad from Niger, Africa. In the first half of the book, Ahmed tells us riveting stories of his life growing up in the Sahara desert. By a turn of fate, he travels to America. In the second half of the book, Ahmed describes his surprising experiences in this completely different world.
Ahmed's stories are simultaneously shocking, awe-inspiring, saddening, heartening, educational, and entertaining. It's an eye-opening experience heading about how the Tuareg people live, especially when contrasted with modern American culture.
All Ahmed's work to share these stories is easily a four-to-five star effort. However, more organization and further explanation would have benefitted readers with an even-deeper dive into the unique existence that was so briefly recounted. Of course, this book was a labor of love by his host family, not something that has seen true professional editing. All considered, I'd much rather have the stories as they stand currently. To hear the tales of such a young but worldly man is pretty incredible.
Well worth a read -- it will certainly give you a new perspective on how other cultures live.
