Brief description: The emergent reader research solution
Identify at least 2 characteristics of this genre and subgenre and discuss how they appear in your book: PebbleGo is a digital story app, that allows students to explore different categories (social studies, biographies, science, animals) and then pick subtopics in each main area, several times over. Students can read the information themselves or have it narrated for them, with each word highlighting as it is spoken. As students hover the mouse over the selection boxes, narration cues and reads the titles. Certain words that may need clarification are highlighted and allow the reader to obtain more information to help with understanding. This is a nonfiction resource that provides information about a wide range of topics. I did notice a mispronunciation in the section that I was looking at, in food around the world. It caught my attention because it is something that I have eaten on a regular basis and would be something that many of the students may have eaten either in their homes or in restaurants.
In what ways and how well does the book as a whole serve its intended audience?: Kindergartners researching about families and themselves can use this tool with minimal help, to gather information about family structures to write a story all about ‘me’. First graders researching about insects can use this tool independently to find the information they need to complete a science project on honeybees.
Awards if any: The PebbleGo website says it’s award winning, but when you click on the link to bring you to more info, no awards are listed.
The online resource, PebbleGo, has easily accessible nonfiction texts for young readers. It provides minimal information about food around the world including a couple of breakfasts, dinners, snacks and sweets. Age level of interest would be 1st-3rd grade, with Fountas & Pinnell reading levels N-E.
Characteristic of ebook genre: Provides a opportunity for exploration beyond the narrative with a brief video clip of an Ethiopian woman at some point in her baking bread process.
Characteristic of genre: user friendly and easy to navigate. Provides audio capability w/text highlighted as it is read.
It doesn't serve its audience that well in that the information is limited.
The twin text that I would use with the e-book “Food Around The World” would be “The Sandwich Swap” by Rania Al Abdullah. In this story, two girls discover that trying new foods that are different from the food of their culture can actually be good. This story would enhance the e-book by showing how different cultures and traditions are unique instead of “weird.” Therefore, in your learning about cultural foods students, might see the value in the differences and be more open to trying new things.
