A fiction twin text that I would use with this book is called "The Bear in the Book" by Kate Banks. (2012) The reason that I chose this book is because it is about a black bear who is hibernating during the winter, and the characters describe some different facts that the bear does before, during, and after hibernation, even though it is a fictional book. "The Bear in the Book" extends on the information from the "Black Bears" eBook because Banks adds additional information about the black bear that makes the students think further. For example, the mother and the boy are reading a story about a black bear, which tells about the black bear eating berries and trying to eat enough so that it will be ready for the winter when it is hibernating. This is an extension to the "Black Bears" eBook because it described what the black bears ate, but it did not talk about them eating food in order to get ready to hibernate for the winter.
"The Bear in the Book" uses a boy and his mother to tell the readers that the black bear does not eat or drink all winter during hibernation, and the "Black Bears" eBook also has this fact. By using these two books together, the teacher will be able to emphasize the importance of this fact to the students. "The Bear in the Book" then extends on this by stating that the black bear must be really hungry when he wakes up, which is not mentioned in the eBook. "The Bear in the Book" also mentions that the black bear is going to go to his den for the winter, which again emphasizes the importance of this fact because it is also stated in the "Black Bears" eBook.
"The Bear in the Book" then shows all of the activities that occur during the winter while the bear is sleeping, which helps the students understand how long the black bears stay asleep when they are hibernating. For example, the book tells about how it starts snowing, how rabbits are hopping in the snow, and how kids are ice skating. When spring arrives, the black bear starts rolling over and begins to wake up, and this fact about when the black bear wakes up is not even mentioned in the "Black Bears" eBook. At the end of "The Bear in the Book," the bear starts walking around, and then the boy falls asleep. This would be a great time to ask the students what they think that the black bear is going to do, and hopefully the students would tell the teacher that the black bear is going to get food. Then the students could use the information from the "Black Bears" eBook to talk about what kind of food the black bear might try to eat.
