Really informative

An easy read. Very thorough practical information I have not read about in other books on raising chickens. I would recommend this book to anyone with acreage and an interest in chicken rearing.

Some good basic info

Fast read with some good basic information. Raising chickens for the first time can be a little overwhelming so the more that you learn, the better your comfort level when you finally take the plunge. There is a lot of first hand information from the author which is nice. Learning from someone else's mistakes is a lot easier than committing the same ones and having to pay the price! I found a couple of editing mistakes. For instance..the author says the hens won't start laying for 16 months..should have said that they start laying around 16 weeks...

If you want chickens read this first to make certain you have the facts and know what you are getting into. This is the 2nd time I've read the book and it convinces me, again, NOT to raise chickens!
Great book full of practical, well written, researched information from beginning to end of the chicken raising process.

It is a good beginners guide. Hopfully one would be inspired to read more about breeds and what specifically each breed needs for space and care. I like that there are instructions for building coops and how to's about brooders. I wish there were more diagrams for the coops.

Very impressive beginners guide that touched on many areas and succinctly thorough. Breeds (appreciate the comments on noise level and containment), diy projects which included various models of coops, egg laying issues, parasites, etc.

Exactly as the title states, a great beginners guide. I learned enough to make me want to know more. I want to get the breed that lays blue and green eggs!

Good guide

This was a good first chicken book. Lots of information but not too much detail. I would have liked more pictures.
