Learn to read with Diego and his friends as they rescue animals in this phonics box set!
Based on the best research on how children develop reading skills, these twelve books introduce a carefully selected progression of letter sounds, starting with the easiest and most common. Each book helps build a young reader's confidence with repeated examples of the letter sounds being focused on, as well as "words to learn" and "words to sound out."
These books will readily appeal to Diego's audience of beginning readers as they capture all of the familiar elements from Diego's hit TV show, including his fantastic exotic animal rescues.

These books are not what I am looking for in a true beginner reader. They claim to be so developmentally created but are not. They include too many very long words for a beginner. They would be a source of frustration for a true beginner. If a kid is still learning phonics, these would be way to hard to read. A better choice to start with is the Bob Books or the Starfall books and after that the Hillert (author) series. These Diego books would come next. I wonder if my son will be embarrassed about such a "kiddy" character by the time is able to read these. They are nicely illustrated though.
This is not the BEST phonics program. It is too difficult for a true beginner. But I still found it easier and more manageable than Dr. Seuss type books. DS has read all the books in the entire series.
