All in all a very clever and dark tale of suspense in, "After The Execution", from author James Raven. Taking place in San Antonio, Texas. Congressman Gideon Crane 53, is on the cusp of capturing the Republican nomination for president of the United States. After just giving a solid debating performance Crane knows he's in the driver seat to grab the nomination. Crane however has a Lee Jordan problem that needs to be put to bed once and for all. Lee Jordan a career criminal along with another career criminal Sean Bates, had broken into the Crane home during a home invasion robbery some ten plus years ago. In the commission of the crime while Bates was killed by Crane, Mrs. Kimberley Crane was also killed. Convicted and sent to death row Lee Jordan was coming up on execution day very quickly. (Texas likes the death penalty to be a speed thing). The press seems to be more interested in the execution than Crane's policies running for office. Gideon Crane wants this whole Lee Jordan thing wrapped up and done. Execution day comes for Jordan. He's led into the chamber and the attendants preform the execution quickly and without a hitch. Several hours later Lee Jordan wakes up in a hotel suite and into the face of FBI Special Agent Aaron Vance. Vance leads the San Antonio office for the FBI. His specialty is arresting/ killing members of the notorious "Texas Syndicate". This cartel drug gang are 8K strong throughout Texas prisons and 16K strong not staring at bars in a cramped cell. Vance and FBI have faked Jordan's execution (Like many they've already done) to have Lee take care of an important job for Vance. Arriving to be briefed on his secret job Lee sees an FBI agent pull a gun and take a shot at him. Luckily for Lee he's not hit however now the chase is on. An inept FBI watches Lee bolt and take a young mother hostage in her SUV and speed away. Meanwhile things are falling apart for Gideon Crane. His torrid affair with his press secretary is about to come out. Once people find out Crane was having a torrid affair with his press secretary ten years ago when Kim was murdered leading to wife number two the nomination may slip away. Former press secretary and now current wife Pauline sees the writing on the wall and Gideon is not going to like the outcome. In an action packed chased filled plot there is not much time to catch a breath. Running at just a blazing 223 pages, "After The Execution", is another James Raven special. Author James Raven has that ability to masterfully create some dark and twisted thrillers. Trying to figure out the connection between Lee Jordan and Gideon Crane to wrap up the conclusion was obvious but I didn't expect it either. Four stars out of five stars possible for, "After The Execution", a dark and clever suspense thriller. I'd highly recommend all James Raven thrillers. The only reason I didn't go with five stars is because unless there will be another Lee Jordan thriller, Raven can't have a career criminal finish up this book as he has. Check it out for a really solid read.
This is the second novel written by the wonderful author, James Raven. Yes, I'm raving about his books! As a British journalist, James Raven researched, in 2007, capital punishment in America. His research took him to the Walls, the Texas state execution chamber where hundreds of inmates have been executed by injection. This was his impetus to write this novel, and it's a doozie! Ten years ago, Lee Jordan was found guilty of murdering the wife of Congressman Gideon Crane. Now, the day before Thanksgiving, Lee Jordan has been moved to the Walls to face his execution. Gideon Crane sits watching the execution, thankful for the closure so that he can get on with his campaign to become a candidate for the office of the U.S. President. Prior to the execution, FBI Special Agent Aaron Vance has contacted the governor to request no stay of this execution. Why would he do this? This is a story that will grab you right from the beginning and throw many twists and turns to make you read to the end to see how all this comes together. I read this nearly non-stop as it moves along revealing many questions, but all these questions will be answered and solved by one man ... Lee Jordan. An exceptionally well written novel with well developed strong characters. The story is potent and engaging. This author has written several other novels, one of which I will be moving on to ... "Red Blitz." Don't let an excellent author down, once you find such an author, read ALL his books.
I bought this book at a book store. I enjoyed reading it. It had a good story to it. It is my first book read by this author. I hope to read more books by this author.
James Raven is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His books are just so captivating that you have to keep reading until its over.
I have a hard time deciding what I am most impressed about, the story or his ability to write about Texas as well as he does since he lives in the UK.
His characters are VERY easy to love. He does not have all that fluff that most books have that you just skim over and get bored with. Each word has a point and you HAVE to read it.
Honestly, I am not sure where to start with this book because just like MALICIOUS Mr. Raven had me spellbound from the start.
It was a very new story line from the whole 'death row' aspect. I really enjoyed that. And on a side note, in college, I went to SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY and lived down the road from The Walls Unit. I loved reading a story that took place in my college town.
I really recommend his books to you. If you want a read that doesn't make you 'think' but is in depth in the content than pick up this book!
I just can't say enough great things about James's work.
Thank you for giving me a copy of this James, it was definitely my pleasure to read!
After then Execution is a non-stop journey of twists and turns, and it's difficult to predict if anything will work out well for the main characters until the last chapters. From the opening chapter, to the final one, the story flows quickly with believeable characters and maybe even situations if you believe everything on the internet.
I highly recommend this book to anybody as its one of the best i've read in a while.
This is a great crime / mystery book! I've never ready anything by James Raven before but I'll be looking up more of his work. I don't want to say too much regarding the story as it would give away far too much and the whole point is to learn as you go along!
I am so thankful and happy that I won this in a Goodreads giveaway!
From the start this book grabs you and doesn't let go... A man on death row receives his lethal injection, only to wake up in a house... that is all I'll tell you to avoid spoiling it... but it's a great book from start to finish! Now I have to go and read more by James Raven!
Interesting story which drew me in, but major twists were made very predictable. The style of writing I found to be often patronising with many little inconsistencies. A good story, but too many foolish decisions by the characters to make it believable, even after accepting the plot.
What a brilliant book and just what I needed after struggling with Wolf Hall. This was a well written fast paced thriller which not only kept me engrossed to the final page but also raised some interesting questions about Capital Punishment in the US.
A really good book, and it certainly makes you think, I had a job to put it down until I'd finished it, I love books that keep you on the edge of your seat, this one is .informative and thrilling, its a good combination and well worth a read.
I quite enjoyed this - interested plot with a few unexpected twists. My only real criticism that it feels as though it has been written expecting a film deal - more like a screenplay than a novel.
