"There are forces called rulers of darkness of this world. They are behind all the works of darkness. They are spirits.
There are forces in the spiritual realm, that are out to devastate the destinies of men." (David Oyedepo, Conquering Controlling Powers)
The foundational Scripture for this book can be found in Ephesians 6:12, which reads:
So, as you can see there are forces or controlling spirits that are out to cause you, the believer, to struggle and interfere with the destiny that God has for you. Our war is not with men, it is with these rulers, powers, and world forces of darkness and wickedness (See 2 Timothy 2:26). The good news is Jesus said that in His name we would be able to cast these spirits out (See Mark 16:17).
I think the teaching I most enjoyed was the Author's teaching on how we can put off the flesh, just as we can put off a piece of clothing. And just like we can put on a piece of clothing, we can put on the righteousness of Jesus Christ. He says, "When I get home at the end of the day's work, I always tell my children to take off my shoes for me. I don't have to start praying that the shoes should obey me when I want to put them off. No! I just go ahead and take them off.
That means, the works of the flesh are as lifeless as the clothes or shoes you put on. So you can put them off at will!
I want you to have a superiority complex against controlling spirits, to be able to see them as things you can handle." The same goes for putting on the works of righteous, you have the power to put them on. He gives many practical ways to do this, including, praying in the Holy Spirit. He says that when you are praying or speaking in tongues, the person of the Holy Spirit begins working inside your body, to burn off all chaff, and purify you from filthiness.
This book was not what I expected it to be. I liked that he emphasizes there is some personal responsibility involved in putting off the works of darkness and putting on works of righteousness. It is not our own righteousness that we put on, but the righteousness of Jesus Christ. I have some good news for you, you are 100% righteous in Christ, not 99% righteous, not 50% righteousness, but 100% righteous. You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! (See 2 Corinthians 5:21) Amen.
Controlling spirits shall NOT have dominion of you, you shall have dominion over them in the Name of Jesus. They will bow to you in Jesus Name! This book will show you how to take authority and dominion over every controlling spirit in your life, so you can walk in the victory that God desires for you. Amen.
