Brief In the mid-21st century, amidst a world entrenched in corporate power and greed, brilliant young physicist Damien Bell emerges to create quantum communications and the AI phenomenon of quantum entities––poised to make global scarcity a thing of the past. Here Damien's journey begins––thrust into the reality of global business influence and national security––to prove that "we are all ONE." Extended When young physicist and engineer Damien Bell and his business partner, fabulous Ellen Brooks, unleash both a revolutionary communications platform and a contemporaneous new life form called Quantum Entities on an unsuspecting world, they unwittingly change the very nature of the economic and political system of their mid-21st century world. Together, as they build a new globe-spanning, ultra-fast growing tech enterprise that begins to get away from them––they inevitably come into conflict with entrenched business and political interests. Along with a special group of friends and colleagues, their adventures take them around North America and beyond––ultimately leading them to San Francisco where they will create the largest-ever US protest movement. What does it take to start, build and then defend a great new enterprise? How do you extend human rights to a new non-human life-form when such rights barely apply to people in these troubled days? Are Quantum Entities truly friends to human beings or are they, as the US Government maintains, a threat to national security? In this first book of the trilogy, Bruce M. Firestone creates a thrilling new genre that captures the essence of science fiction, adventure, romance and the entrepreneurial spirit.
Professor Bruce M. Firestone, B. Eng. (Civil), M. Eng-Sci., PhD. Bruce applied to go to McGill University in Montreal, at 14, arrived after turning 15 and graduated as a civil engineer before legally an adult (then age 21). He was rejected in his first job search because he was considered a ‘child’, not legally responsible for his actions. Three and a half weeks later he was living in Sydney, Australia. A new and exciting Labour government had just been elected. First two things Prime Minister Gough Whitlam did were recall Aussie troops from Vietnam and lower the age of majority to 18.
Firestone worked for the New South Wales government doing operations research and building mixed integer programming models while continuing his education at the University of New South Wales where he obtained his Masters of Engineering-Science degree and then at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he received his PhD in Urban Economics. He was among the first group in Australia to fly hang gliders and not die. He has travelled and worked in Canada, Australia, United States, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, India and many other nations.
He has been at times an engineer, a real estate developer, a hockey guy (founder of NHL team the Ottawa Senators, Scotiabank Place Arena and Ottawa Senators Foundation, a children’s charity), University Prof, a consultant, art collector and benefactor, writer, columnist, futurist and novelist as well as Executive Director of not-for-profit Exploriem.org dedicated to assisting entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs everywhere. Firestone has taught and studied at McGill University, Laval University, the University of New South Wales, the Australian National University, Harvard University, University of Western Ontario, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, in the subject areas of entrepreneurship, business models, architecture, engineering, finance, urban planning, urban design and development economics.
He has launched or helped launch more than 168 startups, writes a blog about entrepreneurship, urban issues and life at EQJournal.org and moderates a lively @ProfBruce community on Twitter. He is also author of Entrepreneurs Handbook II. He is married to a most wonderful girl, Dawn MacMillan. They have five great kids and one fine grandson. His current motto is: “Making Each Day Count”.
QE by Bruce M Firestone (http://www.brucemfirestone.com/) is an adventure as exciting and unpredictable as the unveiling of a new technology or discovery of a new love. It’s a great tale about human spirit and its persistence. Quantum Entity had me on edge waiting to see what would happen next.
It was also a learning journey for me as much as for the book’s main character—young physicist, Damien Bell. The book is about politics, the law, science, science fiction, science speculation, engineering and, above all, founding a globe-spanning, disruptive tech business and then facing down unexpected challenges that come with it, which form the core of the challenge that all entrepreneurs face. A great read for individuals from any background with lots of action and adventure thrown in as well as a moving love story—it’s the beginning of a trilogy as enthralling as quantum technology itself.
