I started reading this author on a whim because I was bored. After the first couple of pages, I found myself laughing and smirking at some of the lines in the book. As I got toward the middle of the book and realized that I had been sitting for several hours and my rear end was aching and I still didn't want to put it down. In the last 3rd part of the book I was reading fast and taking it with me to the bathroom. It ended too fast and I wanted more. Frustrated, I was mad and looked up the author to find out that there are more books coming. What a relief!

Usually a very busy person, I normally read just a little each night. I highly recommend this book because even with my busy schedule, this is the first time in a long time that I have been this excited about reading.

The Cajun dialect runs rampant, is a little quirky to read, but the way the author has spelled it out, you find that You are reading the words the way the people speak on the Swamp People TV show. You can taste the food and smell the gulf coast.

The characters are made believable and have personalities that are engaging. You feel like you know them. This author develops a whole new world for you to escape in.

The only thing bad I can say is that there were some typo's and few minor errors. I checked the author's bio. First book, self published and all done on her own. I admire the tenacity and bow to the creativity with subjects that everyone else repeats over and over.

My Recommendation: Two Thumbs UP!

A light read in the vein of Charlene Harris’ later installations of the Sookie Stackhouse series, with comic-dramatic flair similar to that of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” television series, The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch provides a quick, fun romp through the ever mystical Louisiana back country.

This was fantastic! Every single paranormal creature was in it and I’ve never had a book like that, it was awesome. The storyline became very exciting along the way and the action was great. This author has an amazing imagination to put this together so well. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Ever had one of those books where it started off one way and ended up a totally different way? This was that book for me. The best way to describe it is, it starts off pretty “normal” You follow Dan around while he does some investigative work, only it takes an interesting turn after he meets Stella. Let the fun begin! The story is fun and enchanting. These characters are unique and well written. The author’s touch to add different magical creatures along with mythology into the story did not go unnoticed. Bravo Miss Brock! This is an exciting read and I hope there’s a second book! I give this 5 stars.

I’m at a loss for words. This book was amazing!!! I find it hard recently to find books that hold my attention and this book did just that. I literally couldn’t put the book down. I was intrigued and fascinated by the plot and found myself being shocked by the things I learned. This book had it all: vampires, werewolves, sprit animals, and many more interesting creatures. There was never a dull moment. I found myself staying up really late reading this book. It’s apparent that I am now a huge fan of the author Sonia Taylor Brock writing. It’s just so captivating!

I really liked the plot in the story. An ambitious young reporter named Dan Rawlings goes on a search to find the heirs to Hamilton Fortune. His research lands him in Louisiana. He doesn’t have to look for the heir for long before he meets a mysterious old lady everyone calls, MaMere. It not until shortly later that Dan realizes there is more to the Hamilton Fortune than meets the eye. Thrown into a world unlike his own, Dan will uncover secrets that had been hided for many years. Spending time with MaMere and her family Dan realizes that he is getting more than just a story, he is gaining much, much more. And Dan is ready to fight to protect the people that have captured his heart and the place he starting to feel a connection too.

This book is outstanding. As the reader you feel like you are getting transported into a whole new world, and trust me you are going to love that. You feel the emotions and feelings of the characters and can’t help but laugh and fight with them. The characters are very funny and witty; I especially loved MaMere, Jamie, and Jean Lafitte. Let’s not forget the main character Dan, who was brave, funny, and down-right awesome!! Jamie was an interesting character to read about and I look forward to reading more about her character in the future. All in all, if you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing and entertained for hours then this is your book. It has it all: action, suspense, adventure, and even a hint of romance. This book is one of my favorites I have read so far this year and I can’t wait to read more books in the future by this author. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This book was reviewed by Lee Ashford for Reader's Favorites.

“The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch” by Sonia Taylor Brock is a wonderfully fun fantasy bringing into the mix almost every possible boogeyman you could imagine. Focusing on humor rather than horror, this book is entertainment at its finest. One of a series, it hooked me right in the lip and reeled me in, to buy and read the rest of the series.

This tale begins in Los Angeles with the death of a billionaire’s widow, whose will left everything to a charitable organization. Her niece and nephew were challenging the will. While doing background research, Dan Rawlings, a freelance investigative reporter, caught a hint of a possible heir living in Louisiana. Sensing that one elusive scoop that could have the big publishers beating a path to his door, Rawlings heads to Louisiana. Will he find an heir? Will he find any cooperation with the locals? Or will this turn out to be just one more bust in his not-so-storied career?

It would be misleading to tell you this tale has a twist at the end. This whole story is a series of twists! One after another after another, unanticipated events occur to keep your mind reeling as it tries to keep up with the action. This is one of the most fun stories I’ve read in a long time. I seriously cannot wait to read the rest of this series, because they just have to be as fun to read as was this one.

From mythological gods and dragons, to Boggarts and empaths, no creepy critter is omitted from the action in this tale. The result is an untainted serving of pure fun and entertainment. Sonia Taylor Brock is a name I’m going to remember. I expect to see it often in the years to come. I highly recommend this book for anybody capable of reading it. Young or old, “The Inheritance of a Swamp Witch” will delight you all.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

I wasn't sure what to expect, when I started reading this book, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I absolutely LOVED it!

Dan Rawlings is an investigative reporter. He is looking to find the biggest scoop of his career - the missing heir to the Hamilton fortune. He is a fantastic character. He is a very tenacious person. Nothing will stop him from his mission. However, what he finds in Southern Louisiana is a lot more than he bargained for!

This is a fantastic story, which starts pretty tamely, but as the story progressed, the action soon hotted up! By the time I got to the end of the first chapter, I was completely hooked! There are more magical creatures in this book then you can shake a stick at! Witches, dragons, trolls, fairies, angels and even a vampire or three, all show up between the pages.
There are different points of view from the various characters in this book, and this brings it to life in such a way that I felt like I was actually observing the goings on in front of my eyes. There are surprises and twists in this story that kept me wondering what was going to happen next!

This is Sonia Brock's debut novel. Hopefully, the next book is on it's way to being written, because this book didn't feel like it was written by a beginner; I am most definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series! It was full of Southern warmth and wit, which appealed to me. It was also very well researched. There is a glossary of terms used in the book, along with a list of characters from literary and historical references. This was most enlightening, as I hadn't heard of some of them before.
I highly recommend this book for teens and those who love YA, Fantasy, Supernatural, Paranormal or Action Adventure genres. - Lynn Worton

Amazing story! Soina Brock is a incredible writer with a vivid and wide imagination. I fell in love with her story right away and loved all of the characters! The history the lore and the unique personalities of each and everyone of the characters was amazing! They all came together so beautifully and I don't think it could have been written any better.

The villains in this were amazing as well coming out of the wood work were all kinds of amazing and creepy creatures to battle. I have said many times in my reviews how a great villain my opinion is one of the most important pieces to a story and this book had the best villains! they came from everywhere and they were all different attacking from all different directions! it was a masterpiece.

Another important factor of course are the heroes and let me tell you this book had it all when it came to heroes! I couldn't believe the amazing and wonderful characters in this story! I always like to pick a favourite character from the sidelines as they don't get as much recognition as the main characters but in this book there were no side characters they were all main characters! I loved this fact and it made the book stand out even more in my opinion.

That being said I still had a favourite character and that was scratch patchy. She made me laugh and I really just thought her to be a fun and really unique character.

I would highly recommend this book for others who love to read the supernatural genre like me. It was an amazing read!

Frankly, I don't know what to make of this book. The basic premise is that a young man, a free lance reporter, goes to the Lousiana bayou country to find the missing heir to a fortune, and possibly write the biggest story of his career. The town is reticent to give him any information, but suggests he talk to an elderly lady living deep in the swampland, on an island in the middle of a lake.

That is the last sane episode of the book, which then takes off on a fantasy binge involving every mythological creature you can think of, gods, goddesses, shape shifters, dragons, and a dizzying rondelay of a battle involving creatures, swords of Poseidon, fire, wizards, witches, that I felt I was reading the description of a video game: whack, thwack, crash, blood, red and green, and yellow, and on and on.

Frankly, although in it's own way it was fun, basically, the whole thing made no sense, was incoherent and illogical, and yet I compulsively read on until the very last page.

I have no idea how to rate this book. It gets points for being well-written, but that whole left turn into some other universe just bewildered me. I don't want to give it a three star, because I think a lot of people will really like it. So let's say 4 stars because I am an old crabby curmudgeon and just don't understand the book. OK, that's fair.

Ok, you know when you sit down to read a book, and in the first few pages you like the idea but you're just not really sure if it's going to be something you'll enjoy? I have to admit that's how I felt about this book in the beginning. I did really like getting the back story, but as that came to an end, I wanted to know more about those characters (at least the time growing up that we kind of miss in the quick catch up to present time).

And then the story begins to unfold, rather quickly into the book (THANK YOU!), and I was hooked. Had it not been my finals weeks, I probably would have read this book in one sitting. There were so many twists and turns that I couldn't predict what was going to happen next - and I have a knack for that! I think women are more comfortable writing female leads because we understand them better. But Dan was just a wonderful character and easy for me to connect with, so I really enjoyed that aspect of the story.

The best part for me about this book is how original it is - I have read so many books in my lifetime and this one didn't remind me of any other. I have to say that I will be reading many of Sonia's books in the near future! You should too ;-)

Wait. WHAT? How did this piece of TRASH get five stars? Really? someone liked it? Who? Sometimes you just have to keep reading when
you've picked up a junky book. You start counting the misspelling, the grammatical errors, the punctuation mistakes - the Swamp Witch is a perfect case in point. It is a book that only people who don't read will be able to tolerate..
"The danger was eminent." Oops, I think he meant imminent.
"His athletic physic." Physique, anyone?
"I give you domain over all the bugs" Really? Maybe dominion, but not domain.
Commas are sprinkled randomly over the text, and exclamation points abound!!!!!!
And let's not keep score on the misuse of "its-it's-its.'" I lost count.
This is the poor man's Neil Gaiman - and I mean TRULY poor.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little different from the kind of books I normally read, but the mystery kept me reading to find out what happened next. The writing in the book especially the authentic sounding creole accent in the book really made it to where I could imagine I was there. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves mystery just as much as the fantasy world.

I loved this book! A super fast read with plenty of action and humor. Not really a fan of girly paranormal books because they tend to delve too much in romance and tedious detail, this one was fun. The characters are personable and believable. Having been to the area of Louisiana that is described, I could see the place, taste the food and hear the accents that make it unique.

Long before I met this wonderful Author/lady. Long before I knew of this book I was a fan of the TV Show; The Swamp People. I still am. I love love this book and can't wait to read the second one which I also have on my shelf here at home. The verbiage, language all flow for this storyline. I was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so this story reminds me of a few mysterious nights.
I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to find time to read. What have I been missing?

Way too much exposition.

I really wanted to like at book. I have read it three times before I felt that I knew enough to pass judgement on it. There are very good elements, a great beginning, terrific setting, and an obvious desire to entertain. What is missing is writing discipline. There are far too many sections where the author tells far too much and shows much too little. The rapid fire introduction of gods, and magical creature's without taking the time to craft a believable world to support them, the effort to pile on every idea that the writer conceived, is strong evidence of a immature writer. I can only pine for the story that might have been. This is one more manuscript that needed a real editor prior to publisher. I bought this book for free from Amazon as a promotion. The price was about right, Amazon should do more the prepare authors for publication than to just provide a platform for readers to do the work of sending books back for rewrite, and to GI e rejection notices.
I can only hope that this author will continue to write, and mature. In the past this maturation was managed by publishers, today anyone can take a chance and sent their manuscripts through the transom and straight to readers without the guiding hand that quality publishing houses gave in the past.

The Inheritance of the Swamp Witch by Sonia Taylor Brock is an incredible debut novel. Warning: if you are a stickler for proper English, whether British or American, you may want to think before clicking. Personally I like to write the way I talk, but some do have pet peeves, and the author herself points out that her book is written in true Southern Louisiana style — Cajun all the way. There is a glossary to assist with pronunciation. That said:

A journalist hoping for his big break follows a lead to an unknown heir of a recently deceased billionaire’s widow, and finds a great deal more than he bargained for. Gods and dragons and boggarts, oh my!

As I said, debut novel straight from the writers thoughts to the published work, well deserving of 3.5 rounded to 4 stars. I can’t wait for more.

It's like this was written as a script for an audio book. The phonetic spellings of Cajun accents and the echoing drawl of some of the creatures threw me out of the story as I tried to work out what was actually being said.

That in combination with the sheer number and types of supernatural creatures, was more than I was willing to wade through.

Since it's the start of a series, I can only assume that the threadbare story was to make sure we were introduced to the world properly. But these three things in combination make the series one I'll give a pass to.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

I . . . . .struggled with this one!

It takes a long time, way past half way for things to start to come together and I very nearly dumped, I have to say! It DOES pick up, it just took a long time.

The book starts off with Dan, an investigative journalist, chasing a story that will break him into the big time. He tells his tale in the first person. It flips between Dan and other characters, and they have THEIR say in the third. This is one of the reasons I struggled. While most changes occur at a chapter end, at some points, the changes occurs in the middle of a chapter, with no warning at all, and it meant I had to double back a couple of times, to see if I missed anything.

Also, the book is set in Southern Louisiana and most of the characters speak the local lingo. Which at points, is hard work! Especially in the beginning when we are still getting to know everyone, and I found myself reading out loud, to voice out what the words said, and to get the gist of what was going on. It does get better, as more characters appear and we lose in bombardment of local lingo.

And there are a lot of characters who pop up! Loved that, not all is immediately obvious, and when things become clear, you think, did you miss something, but actually no, you weren't told these characters where whales, you just assumed they were people!

I'm still not entirely sure what the Fey want the twins for, and I have other questions that I hope will become clear in the next book. I have to read later today.

So, because it took so long for me to become fully engaged, and because of the flipping mid-chapter...

3 GOOD stars
