Fragile Thoughts: A Healing Memoir

Rate this book
How do you deal with drama - or cope with trauma?

Fragile Thoughts explores the intersection of three powerful healing tools – vulnerable storytelling, journaling, and yoga - and how those practices can help transcend trauma.

Katie takes us on a soul-searching journey revealing her origin story by sharing character-creating experiences - from a speech impediment to drugs and depression to surviving sexual assault. Katie’s story showcases how these three healing techniques have helped her discover meaningful connections, realize her purpose, and bring her peace.

This book provides inspirational tales of vulnerability and includes invitations for readers to engage in the same powerful practices that had a profound effect on the author.

Written as both a personal narrative and a practical guide, Fragile Thoughts helps readers find their own path to healing - because we all have a #writetoheal.

So far this book is taking me to places of my own struggles. Katie is very upfront about her fails growing up. It gave me such comfort knowing my fails weren't experienced 'alone' even though they were 25+ years apart.

This book is not only a story but a reference guide as we navigate our own thoughts as we work on healing. The writing prompts and yoga guide will be your 'go to' to work it all out. So beneficial!

I am truly lucky to know the author through our yoga studio. What a force! I had purchased this book months ago to support Katie and was saving reading it for a special time. I wanted to be in a grounded state of mind so that I could give her words the time and focus they deserved. Fast forward to this weekend. I am feeling unsettled, uninspired and deep sadness over the loss of a shared friend. I picked up Katie’s book hoping for a sense of connection to our community. I’m so glad I saved this book for when I did.

Katie is a gifted writer, using her decades of journaling her life-experience to tenderly put her wisdom to the published page. She offers the reader a chance to self-reflect in a way that feels safe and supportive. The prompts she asks at the end of each chapter feel relevant to the reader. And while her story had painful chapters, it was a gift to be able to read how she created a beautiful life after much trauma. We always have much more in common than we realize, even after years of sharing the same spaces! Thank you for sharing your life so generously, Katie! It’s an honor to know you and to have read your work!

In full transparency, I am one of Katie’s relatives; however I was unaware of the majority of the content in this book, or at least the details of certain events. While reading Fragile Thoughts I discovered that we share more experiences and personality traits than I thought, and I think anyone reading this can have some kind of connection with her in that way- not just those who know her personally. The entire book truly reflects who she is as a person and captures the vulnerability and strength that she carries with her everyday.

Katie has always been someone I have looked up to; and I remember always receiving a journal from her every year on Christmas, with her encouraging me to write about my feelings since I was young; which in retrospect helped me get a head start on my healing journey. It took me awhile to actually take her up on that advice, but I thought her interference with my own healing would stop there. And yet, her book has helped me heal in so many ways while also allowing me to realize how helpful writing can be.

I fully encourage working through the prompts while taking them seriously. Her story alone is empowering and had me completely invested; this is coming from someone who really isn’t an avid memoir reader. The prompts are often simple, yet requires you to really dig deep and reflect- and that is crucial for healing. The prompts are also very versatile, anyone with any past or background is capable of having a successful reflection and response to at least one prompt per chapter.

I couldn’t be more proud of Katie, to turn her trauma into thoughtful reflections that are now a part of so many people and their journeys.

I absolutely loved this book! Couldn’t put it down. Katie was a classmate of mine in grad school but there was so much of her story i didn’t know until now. I loved how open and vulnerable she was throughout all her experiences and found some of them resonating with my own experiences growing up. I appreciate the journal prompts and can’t wait to start using them - i felt a need to rush through the book so will be going through again and take the time to write on the prompts myself.

Fantastic Book Alert‼️‼️‼️

Omg!!!! Where do I even start? I finished Fragile Thoughts by @katiebeanwellness last night and was blown away! What an amazing and courageous memoir! Katie and I sure have a lot in common. There were multiple times when I thought I was reading about my own life😳. I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those who experienced any type of trauma. Not only does Katie pour out her soul, she includes journal prompts and yoga practices. Wow, just wow❤️

Great book! Insightful and thought provoking. Hard to put down as it’s rare to see such raw honesty and each chapter left you turning the page to find out what happened next. Journal prompts are super helpful for anyone wanting to work through their memories, traumas, or just wanting to get in touch with themselves. Highly recommend!

I’m a strict audiobook person- I haven’t read a book with my own eyeballs in years! Mostly because I struggle to pay attention and stay committed. I say this to emphasize that this was NOT the case with this book. Katie’s story was vulnerable and unabashed. I am very grateful to have read and learned from her experience as a trauma survivor, educator, and yogi.

The book will help you be open with your own struggles in a way no other book does. Katie really has tips for healing questions to provoke your own experiences and is extremely open about the most traumatic parts of her life and her journey to rediscovering herself. Triggers for SA

*full disclosure I am acquainted with the author through the yoga studio*

As an avid reader of memoirs, I thoroughly enjoyed Fragile Thoughts. Katie’s candor and vulnerability. Once again, reminded me that we travel through life, knowing only a small fraction of someone’s entirety. I am grateful not only for her self reflection, but also the inclusion of journal prompts that helped her craft her own story into being.

In the interest of full disclosure, Katie is my neighbor. That's an important detail, though. We've of course chatted about work, the weather, and a variety of other superficial topics. We've attended the same Halloween party, and snapped selfies in our amazing costumes. We have not, however, breached any of the topics discussed in this book. When I read Katie's experiences, I was absolutely floored by how much I could relate. Some experiences I've had were very similar to Katie's, and others (I know without a doubt) could have just as easily been mine. This all led me to a different thought, though. What would happen if everyone read a memoir written by their neighbor? How much better would we all understand one another? Do we miss essential connections simply because we only allow ourselves to exist within a cordial, superficial, relationship? Since reading Fragile Thoughts, I'm making a conscious effort to connect more deeply with people, and find more point of similarity than difference.

This book is beautifully written in a way that makes it easy for the reader to feel connected to Katie’s experience. The yoga practices and journal prompts throughout the book felt so thoughtfully aligned with the life events and experiences Katie was sharing in the preceding chapter. This book is a beautiful example of post-traumatic growth, resilience, and generosity. Thank you Katie for sharing all that you did and for being a guide to others. Your strength and wisdom shine through in this book!

Full disclosure: I know Katie through her wonderful monthly writing group "Write to Heal" and her Substack space @katiebeanwellness, so this is a somewhat biased (but honest) review.

I took my time with this wonderful book because it is more than just a memoir, it is a series of mini-retreats.

Katie not only shares her life's journey to date in a clear, honest, relatable way (and I related to many many parts of it, as I'm sure every other woman who is on a healing journey will as well), but she also shares 5 journalling prompts and a yoga-based practice at the end of each chapter. I read one chapter at a time (never more than one a day, and sometimes only one in a week or two), took my time journalling in response to her thoughtful prompts, and ended each chapter by actually doing each of the yoga-based practices (not just reading them as I usually do when some kind of action is suggested LOL!).

As a result, I feel like I not only got to know Katie better (and she is a thoughtful, courageous person to know), but I now have a map of my own healing journey because of her thought-provoking prompts. Ending each of these "sessions" with her suggested yoga-based practice felt like a very healing, complete experience, and I have incorporated several of them into my daily routine. Katie also helpfully provides links to her YouTube channel for some of these practices.

Would I have taken the time to savour each chapter the way I did if I didn't know Katie? Maybe not. And that would have been my loss. I am so much more aware of the care a writer puts into their work because of Katie's multi-faceted, interactive approach. I don't think I've ever read a book that not only kept me engaged with the story, but also inspired me to be more thoughtful and proactive about my own. Thank you, Katie, for providing such a singular, healing experience.

This book is the authors healing memoir. The authors many layers of hardships and obstacles make it relatable in so many ways, and the author’s bravery and resilience paves the way for many to follow. I immensely enjoyed this book!! I also loved the additions at the end of each chapter with prompts for you to journal/self reflect and also to do a yoga exercise or meditation which is in alignment to the topic covered in the chapter. The author is a talented story teller, poet and yogi!! I highly recommend this book for a teenager up to late adulthood. I plan to encourage my daughter to read this as a teenager, so much wisdom and insight is captured.

An exhilarating ride through some of the most challenging seasons of life. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. It’s a brave thing to put these experiences out in the world for others to witness and Katie does it with such authenticity. A tale of survival and recovery, this story and the way it’s told is meant to be shared widely. It’s heartbreaking, relatable, and triumphant.

Katie shares her healing journey, recounting some of her challenges in her life, and how she overcame them. She includes some yoga and journaling prompts so the reader can explore those tools for themselves. Some chapters could be triggering, and the author calla them out in advance. Very readable, and inspiring.
