Recovering from the sting of not being awarded a Pulitzer Prize… or, any prize, really, A.J. Schmitz returns with his third memoir – Nut Job. Continuing his walk down memory lane, he recounts better days, like when he tried to go on a game show to pay off colossal hospital bills following the birth of his son; the summer he modeled nude for an art studio; and when his anxiety nightmares came true in real life. All this, plus ruminations on taxes, allergies and his multiple visits to mental institutions.
Schmitz has outdone himself with Nut Job! I was hoping to love this book as much as his first two, Buggin' Out and Death of Our Dreams. I love it just as much if not more. His writing is really smoothly flowing and his stories are just getting funnier. This author really knows how to spin a yarn in a way that is so hilariously relatable. You just never know what to expect from the next chapter, what his take on the mundane will be or what he will pull out of his crazy life bank of memories. If you love guys like David Sedaris, Dave Barry..that kind of writing style, I really recommend giving AJ Schmitz a try. I have a feeling he is just getting started on a successful writing career and I'm looking forward to what is next!
