Klepp is my go to when I'm wanting books that elevate the voices of victims and survivors while also giving me some spice. This was a lot different than the usual Klepp book. Inheritance of Misfortune still gives you a strong FMC who is moving beyond her trauma, but it's more thriller than romance. There is a love story in it but it definitely takes a backseat to the action.

I am obviously going to dive right into book 2!

I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

I really liked this one. I think by this point I must have read over 20 books by Emily but this one was different to her usual style.

Yeah Megan our FMC goes through trauma first when she is 12 and witnesses her dad kill her mum and then more recently at the hands of a serial killer. But she is a fighter she took her childhood trauma and used it as the driving force to become a homicide detective.

I have to say that I really liked the entire homicide team and I liked her with Greg.

I really hope that we get more of them all in book 2 and 3.

Not Emily’s usual style of read, however, they do say a change is better than a rest 🤣

We are led into a story of a S3rial k!ller and the officers leading us through the investigation, except this has more plots and turns to the story. The criminal research aspect I loved, so I’m not going to spoil it. I connected with all the characters too and like that they were a ‘family’ and didn’t give up.

It was well written, though some parts were repetitive as we knew the evidence but it was prevalent to the continuity of justice being served. I really enjoyed this first book in the series.

Megan an innocent 12 year old girl who is frozen watching her father murder her mom only for him to abandoned her the next day. She declares from then on she will do her best to catch the evil in the world so no one feels the pain she did. Until she is kidnapped Will her team find her in time? Should she have listened to her partner Greg’s advise? Such an amazing emotional read!

It's about dang time Greg! My only complaint with this story is that I would have liked for the ending to be a little more. I feel like he got off too easy, but hey, life works like that so I get it. I know, I'm mean, but I wanted him to suffer. He deserved it. I really liked Megan's character growth throughout the story. It was very realistic and believable. This was a good read and I'm excited to see what happens in book 2.

This book was dark and had a huge plot twist that I did not see coming. Meg is a detective for the Greensburg homicide department and she has a haunting past that pushed her to being a cop to help those who need it. She and her partner make a great team that is until they cross the line and sleep with each other. To her it was everything and it made her hopeful for something more that was until Greg opened his mouth and stuck his foot right into it. He wants the same thing but remembers what the protocol is for dating a co-worker he wanted to make sure he went down the correct path so neither of them could get in trouble.

Meg will do what she does best which is bottle everything up and get buried in work to keep her from thinking about it. Right now they are working a case and a 3rd body has been discovered dumped in the same lake as the first 2 victims. To make sure they get everything the lake gets dragged and 9 more bodies are uncovered brining the total victim count to 12. This is the first time in years that they had a serial killer and the last one they dealt with ended up killing one of their own and it is hard for them to talk about it. One of the things that stand out about all the victims is that they are similar in build along with brunet hair, some would even say they look eerily similar to Meg. This puts the team on edge and they will do what they do to protect and make sure she does not end up like the others.

The more they work on this case they see that the way the woman were killed is exactly the same way David Locke killed his 13 victims. We know its not him as he was arrested and then killed himself in jail, so now they have to figure out if they have a copy cat on their hands or did he have a partner they didn’t know about. While investigating Meg gets a couple of text message's telling her to back off of course she doesn’t listen and when her team learns of her getting these messages it is too late. The killer had it out for her so he now has her and the team is trying not to spiral as they scramble to figure out who it is that took her.

Meg knows she has to play the situation right or she will end up dead like the others. Her abductor takes his time to mentally torture her as well as physically torture her. She was beaten badly with his belt after she struck a nerve and called him a coward like her father. That was not the only abuse that she suffered through, she was also sexually assaulted twice, the second time realizing who the killer was and then her head was smashed against the metal frame of the bed which should have killed her but it didn’t. Her team makes it to her in time to get her in an ambulance and to a hospital. The head injury was so severe she was in a coma for 6 days and Greg never left her side unless he was made to shower or eat by his team and Sargent. When she finally wakes up they make sure to run their tests before she is cleared to go home.

She is a stubborn woman and wants to close up one last thing before she has to go home and be forced to rest and do nothing but be taken care of. She wants to see the interrogation of the killer, while they want to object they know it will do no good so they let her as long as she takes it easy. While the killer admits what he did to the other 12 victims he killed, the prosecutor finally reads off all of the charges and when his body count doesn’t match he says as much. My favorite part to this is that they let Meg walk into the interrogation room to show him he failed and she is alive and will survive. Other the next 6 months Meg has taken the time she needed to until she got the all clear from the doctors to return to work and even then we know her team will make her take it easy. The killer is convicted on all of his charges and is to remain in prison the rest of his life. The cabin that he took all the woman to where they met their final moments was destroyed and a memorial was built in its place to honor those who were lost.

This book was unbelievably amazing. It was dark, twisted and really unsettling learning about who the killer was and the dark past that Meg went through. In stead of ending up like her father she followed the path that was meant for her to help people and when she made it to the homicide department she found her family that she knew she could always count on.

The Greensburg Collection - Emily Klepp

5/5⭐️

📚📚📚
This one is a 3 books in one read and ugh I was just obsessed! It totally took me a bit to get through but I was totally consumed from page one until the end. To me this had a different feel to any Emily Klepp book I’ve read yet, but I enjoyed it so much. The way it really make you feel like your in the middle of the investigations with these characters were everything. I got lot in this for a whole day and then some. Megan is one amazing FMC so many time she could have gave up but this woman just kept pushing every bad thing that happened to her. The trauma did not stop her. Just when you think things are getting better Emily whacks us again with something else. This one had me crying to smiling and not breathing because of all the twists and turns. I seriously loved Greg with how caring and protective he was. So many other characters will absolutely grab your heart too. Our girl Megan though really needs to learn to trust her gut instincts and feelings more cause omg. Overall i absolutely loved this collection and totally recommend grabbing it!

I really enjoy how Emily Klepp uses her books to amplify the voices of victims and survivors. This book was definitely more of a thriller than a romance, but I enjoyed it.

Megan Nell was twelve years old when she watched as her father, David Locke, ended her mother’s life. She found out that her mother was the thirteenth victim and her father had turned himself in. Years later, she is now a detective when they discover bodies of women who fit the same profile as Megan and were killed in a way reminiscent of her father’s crimes. She has to find the killer before he strikes again, but she doesn’t realize that the killer may be closer than she can imagine.

I had a little bit of trouble getting into this story. I don’t read as many thrillers as I used to so it was definitely a switch. I really liked Megan’s strength and resilience. You can definitely feel it through Klepp’s writing. I also appreciated that Megan was open about her need and the helpfulness of her therapy sessions. In a world where mental health struggles can be stigmatized, it is great to read about such a strong woman who still recognizes that therapy has its uses.

This narrative is incredibly heartrending. Megan, a police officer, achieved the highest score on her examination, yet she endured a traumatic childhood. She investigates numerous cases involving women who have been beaten, assaulted, or murdered. Her father was a serial killer, responsible for taking many lives, including that of her mother. Tragically, she witnessed him murder her mother when she was just a young girl, and the following day, he abandoned her to fend for herself. The plot thickens when she is kidnapped by an unexpected character. Throughout her struggles, she discovers love, providing her with a safe haven. I truly appreciated the twists and turns in this story and eagerly anticipate what unfolds in the next two books of the series. Emily's writing captivates me, leaving me wanting more and fully engaged. I highly recommend this series, but please be aware of the trigger warnings.

Megan is a detective in the Greensburg station and Is part of a team chasing down a serial killer until she finds herself kidnapped by the killer, her working partner Greg and the rest of the team rush to find her before time runs out.

Check the trigger warnings.

It is another fantastic read for this author. I love the crime thriller aspect of this; the twists and turns I didn't see coming, and I was engrossed from the start.  This doesn't shy away from the realities of the darkness Megan went through, showing clearly her dissociation at times and her ongoing work to overcome the horrors she was subjected to.

Megan and Greg's characters work so well together; Greg is completely smitten with Megan, and his patience, understanding, and love are a balm to the soul.  Megan is a fighter through and through.

This is definitely a must read, but do check the trigger warnings.

"She was the target all along..."

This book is classified as Dark Romance, and is book one of a series. It does have a trigger warning list: SA, kidnapping, NONCON keeping it in the family, graphic violence.

The book is written in first (modern) and third (childhood) person. This book has multiple point of views: Megan and Greg. Megan has a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and is a part of the homicide unit. She is investigating a case that hits too close to home and is being stalked. Then there is Greg, who is her partner at the unit.

I gave this book five stars. I will say this, you have to pay attention to the timeline because it does jump a bit. Also, in the beginning, there was two parts that seemed to be repetitive, but it wasn't that bad. Once again, this author is absolutely amazing and I am glad I was suggested her work!

If you are looking for a crime story this is the book for you. I was hooked from the beginning. I loved a good mystery to solve. There is a new serial killer that is copying David Locke.

Megan Nell was 12 years old when she watched her father murder her mother. She is the daughter of serial killer David Locke. This puts her on the path to becoming a homicide detective. She is secretly in love with her detective partner. This woman experiences some major trauma in her life, but she is still a strong and independent. Megan is stalked and threatened but does not stop doing her job.

Greg Mallard is Megan partner. He is sweet and shows his emotions. He is secretly in love with her too.
This book has a lot of emotional twists and turns. There is little spice, but the plot is big.

Not really what I expected from Emily Klepp. It was quite different from her normal writing style and I loved it. I am glad to see it is a three part series and this is the first. I'm very curious to see where this will go from here.
Megan, a very intelligent police officer, has gone through some pretty traumatic sh!t, and is always trying to take on those assaults on women cases. I would give you more but I feel that you should read this one for yourself to get the full picture of how different this is from Ms. Klepps writing. This book will twist and turn in directions you don't expect and there are many “what the” moments.
I give this a 5 star because it had me so engaged and now wanting to know more and see where this goes. It is captivating and emotional. Now I’m off to book two because I can not wait to find out what's next in this series.

The Greensburg Collection

This whole series was amazing! It had me on the edge reading it! There were days where I had to take a break because it was intense but over all this was beautifully written. I absolutely loved our FMC! Megan was just amazing strong woman and I loved her so much! From start to finish I knew she was only going to get stronger and stronger. And Greg was just as amazing as watching her and protecting her! I will say book 3 left me for shock! Like I couldn’t believe it but in a way I saw it all coming full blown to a head! I knew something was off when talking about her father I couldn’t figure out why it bothered me so much. But towards the end I was like finally. The gaps got filled in and I was like oh my god at it all. Emily’s writing is amazing and I absolutely love everything she puts out there! It’s all amazing!!!

This is the first book in series. This story is amazing and so realistic I felt like I was there with Megan the whole time with everything she went through. Megan Nell seen a child's worst nightmare when she watched her father beat her mum very badly. Fast forward a few years and Megan becomes a detective and puts people like her father in prison. When she starts getting threatening messages because of a case they are doing she ignores them and doesn't tell her partner gregg until she gets the last threatening messages she tells her colleagues but refuses help. Things take a nasty turn from there in this fantastic story. I absolutely love the ending and I think it's the perfect one for this couple.

a little bit different from what I'm used to from Emily but just as captivating!

we are introduced to 12 yo Megan who witnesses her father strangle her mother to death! from there the story escalates, taking us on a journey of love, pain and torture!

Megan proves you are not what your genetics may say you are, a strong willed FMC who finds her family in the homicide police department!

when a Series of murders occur all following the same style we are introduced to one sick sick man.

a heart breaking, read that will have you gasping and hoping with everything you have that the good guys prevail!

I loved this book, such an interesting read with a great story line and an even better ending!

This book was a departure from the previous Emily Klepp books that I have read and she hit the ball out of the park. While there were still dark undertones, this book was more of a police thriller with minimal spice. The focus of this book is around Megan Nell and Greg Mallard, who are up against the clock when a serial killer begins to focus in on Meg. Both their professional and personal relationship is put to the test, as they are partners in the Greensburg police department and a relationship could have devastating consequences to their careers. Throughout this book readers are kept on the edge of their seats as Meg tries to stay one step ahead of the killer and Greg is desperate to do anything to keep Meg alive.

This book is different then other Emily Klepp books. This is one of the first books written by the author, as per her own admission lol, and the style is different then how her stories are currently.
Not a bad thing at all. Just shows how versatile the author is. This book is still dark and you need to check your triggers, but there is so much more to the story.
It delved a lot more into the characters, who they were, why they did the things they did and got into the procedure of things. But also the different POVs.
It was low on spice but high on plot. I'm excited to read the second book and can't wait for the 3rd!!

Wow this book threw me for a loop because one Emily’s writing technique had change a bit from then to now. You could feel Emily saying how everything happened in some emotion here. You feel the emotion though that Melissa has to deal with throughout this read. However your mental is important to us so please read the triggers.

Melissa’s life wasn’t easy by no means with the fact that when she was 12 her father killed his wife her mother. Her father left her at a diner to order them breakfast.

Melissa gets taken but the team is on the case and will do anything to save her. Will she be saved or will she find her end. The only way to know is to read this three book set.

WOW!!! This book started hard with Megan having to watch her father murder her mother and then abandon her. Yet she rises above that and becomes a cop so she can help rid the world of all the slum and bad people. Hen Megan was kidnapped t seemed like poor Megan could never get no relief. Yet through all her struggles she found love and safety. I love how this story started strong and kept me hooked all the way to the end. I really am amazed at the ups and down, twist and turns this story gave me and i could not be happier. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Greensburg collection. Emily Klepp is an amazing author and I’m excited to see what else she comes out with.

This book brings me the Emily I have grown to really like. It features Megan, who as we learn had a terrible childhood. It is one that she thought she had escaped or had she. Either way, her past shaped her into the woman she is now.

I liked Megan but I struggled to connect with the rest of the characters. In fact, in the beginning I was not feeling the romantic vibe between Megan and Greg. Yet, later in the story after some of the events, I did like Greg. However, it felt more comfortable relationship.

While, I may not have thoroughly enjoyed this book, I do want to read book two as I want to see how this series shapes out and progresses with Megan and Greg.

This is the first book in The Greensburg Collection. Emily Klepp has quickly become one of my favorite authors! And I am always excited to see and read one of her books.
I loved the story and the FMC! She had such a traumatic past and still managed to move on with her life. She is such a strong character in both mind and spirit. I cried while reading this book. Her trauma and pain just had me so emotional. The MMC is such a strong, protective and caring partner. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to express himself very well!
Thank you,Emily Klepp, for such a strong, emotional and powerful story! I am now planning on reading the second book because I need to see what happens next!

Where to start. Emily placed three books in this series intertwined within each other and over 700 pages that captivated and kept this readers attention the entire way through. Megan as her role of a detective and mother. Her struggles, the traumas she went through along with solving murders and investigating crimes; she is one strong female character that you grow to love. There is so much happening in all these books it is hard to detail it, but it truely is amazing Emily's ability to bring her characters to life , and mix trauma with spice and crime all in together to create one amazing read.

This book gave me vibes from Law and Order, Criminal Minds, and Chicago PD and I must say, I enjoyed it...

We have our FMC, Megan Nell and she is a detective, who was a ward of the state for a long time. Her father was a serial killer who gave himself up when her mother died at his hands.

Her partner, Greg, is in love with her and they have some serious miscommunication at the beginning of this book.

The twists this story took were unexpected and shocking, but in the best way possible. I feel like there was another twist right at the end... so I guess I've got to get to book 2 and find out if I'm right or not...

I have read a few of Emily's books so far and I have loved each and every one. This one is no different. Getting a chance to listen to someone read this was just another layer. You could feel the emotions from the narrator as she read some of the more heart-breaking chapters. Near the end, I questioned how big a cliff hanger would Emily have since I knew there was a sequel. I am happy that how this book ended was not how I thought it would end. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Detective Megan Nell.

Megan Nell is a strong FMC with a tragic backstory and is a homicide detective. Her team works together to solve murders in Greensburg. This is a dark police procedural with an element of romance. Megan knows a lot about murder, having watched her father murder her mother in front of her. These current murders seem similar to the last serial killer they had in the area. This story has twists and turns and gets totally twisted. It also shows healing and found family. I recommend this first installment of the Greensburg collection.

Wow. Just. Wow.

Megan had a horrible (using that word lightly) childhood, but decided to be better than her circumstances and become a detective. She never thought she would end up inside this case.

This whole series had me 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I was expecting a dark romance of some sort but it’s more of a dark thriller, which I’ve discovered in freaking here for!!!! I’ve never read anything like this but it kept my attention so well (which a lot of thrillers don’t) and I didn’t put it down!!! She’s thick but totally worth it! Highly recommend.

This book was really, really good! A murder, mystery with a dark edge! It literally has a little bit of everything in it, making it a well rounded book of utter perfection! I loved the dark elements with the book! I love a good detective story and this had all of the whenever to make it fantastic! Twists and turns that will keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat! I loved the interaction between all of the characters. That's also several heartfelt moments throughout. A must read! I can't wait to read book 2!
